Against the Vikings, South Hu- ron scored within seven minutes of the game when Sean McCann got his fust of two after the Goderich goalie bobbled the ball, But two minutes later, Goderich tied it when Panthers' goalie Dar- ren Kints came out to challenge a shot and was beaten. Following , a collision with the goalie, South Hu- ron's Josh Vermeulen gave the home team a 2-1 lead. Except for a goal scared later in the game by McCann, the South Huron goals were far from picture perfect. "When we got to the finals last year the game wasn't really that great either," said Panthers' co - coach Ray Lewis, who along with co -coach Bill Shore was drenched in water by the players after the game. It was almost 3-1 late in the first half when Vermeulen crossed the ball into McCann who just missed. While the Panthers dominated in the opening half, the visitors came to life in the second half. Very early in the second half, the Josh Vermeulen, right; fires the ball into the net during Monday's game. Running interference was Trevor Taylor who stumbled into the Goderich goalie. But with 15 minutes left in the game, captain Jeff Lingard got what proved to be the winning goal following a pena1t $ . It was a hand ball, the guy saved *goal," described Lingard. He was awarded a penalty kick after a Goderich defender knocked a ball away from the goal line with his hands. Lingard missed on the initial kick, but walked in to score on his own rebound. A member of last year's Huron - Perth championship team, he. was surprised to win two years in a row. "We really rebuilt this year. I didn't think we had the guys to do it," he said. The best goal of the game came just a couple minutes after Lin- gard's winner, when McCann bumped his way past a pair of Goderich fullbacks to score the in- surance goal. South Huron 5, "Stratford Central 1 Sean McCann had a big game Friday as the Panthers hosted the Stratford Central Ramblers in the Huron -Perth semi-final match. Sports Recruitprs Huron -Perth Do you remember the movie, One -on - One with Bobby Benson? He portrayed a high school basketball superstar who was recruited and went on to play at a big U.S. university. Good enough to catch the eyes of the university coach- es, he went on not only to play college ball but get an educa- tion. While we are g1ueillrto the T.V. watching these athletes in their early 20's reap the success which big college sports get, you have to wonder how they got there, For those high school athletes looking for that glory on the athletic field and receive an education, It may not be that far out of your gras*. Three years ago, Sports Recruits, International was formed in Welland and there is now a Huron -Perth area representa- tive which is visiting the many high schools. While Jim Redfem is the rep, Dave Parsons is the sales rep i+le makes the school visits and he has already been to Exet- er's South Huron District High School. Although SRI has only signed one athlete since in began in January in Hurori-Perth to Its program, there are others out there showing interest. . "We've investigated about 25 athletes and looked into send- ing them packages," said Parsons. A former second baseman with the Exeter Express Senior Baseball Club, Parsons said the main purpose of SRI is to bridge a gap of information between the colleges and univer- sities and the student -athletes. "All it does is match high school athletes with colleges and universities. We offer them exposure." He said there is still a very strong inclination for the stu- dent -athletes to pursue a sports career in the U.S. colleges simply because of the greater incentives. In Canada, the CIAU offers awards and bursaries. The awards cannot exceed $ 1,500 per year and for academic scholarships, students must have at least an 80 percent aver- age. "That is some times difficult for the student -athlete." Parsons said SRI helps get rid of some of the scholarship confusion between the students and the universities. United States schools offer much more in the way of schol- arships because, according to Parsons they -have a fund of over $10 billion from the federal government tri draw on. "It's a business in the States from a college level." Parsons said SRI will catch on as soon as he is able to visit more schools end meet with more students. "I want to help the kids, that's the bottom line to me."
