Many activities planned for Physical Fitness Week

EKED R - It's that time of the
year Canada, to wake up those
muscles and get active.

Corporate Challenge.
While the nation wide program is
celebrating its 10th Anniversary.
this is the third year for the South
Huron Recreation Department to
host various activities to wake up
the muscles and get ready for a
physically active summer.
Last year, the recd department had
a new idea called the Mini -
Corporate Challenge.
"We didn't get .a major response
last year. We tried this corporate
challenge andlatdfive teams," said
rec director Lynne Farquhar.
She hopes to see the Exeter
event, which was won by . the
Times -Advocate Typos in 1991,
expand to maybe 10 teams this
year and eventually 20.
(3oderich has 60 teams entered in
their corporate challenge.
"1t started out fairly small and
just mushroomed," said Farquhar.
The challenge is scheduled for
Wednesday, May 27 at 7:30 p.m. at
the rec centre.
Kicking off Fitness Week in Ex-
eter is what Farquhar has dubbed,

Excess 'body weight forces
Your heart to work
harder. For every ex-
tra pound of body fat
you carry, your heart
must pump bloat
through an extra mile
of blood vessels.
Why do we have so
much trouble losing
weight? Many people
believe that ,dieting
alone .will do the trick.
However, successful
weight loss is deter-
mined by two factors; you eat-
ing habits and, the amount of
daily physical activity you get.
A combination of increased
physical activity and healthy eat-
ing habits is necessary to
achieve and maintain a healthy
weight loss.
For most Canadians, the first
step toward healthier eating hab-
its is to lower their intake of fat.
Fat contains rabre than twice -the
calories of an equal amount of
protein or carbohydrates.
Lowering your intake of fat
does not necessarily Hasan de -
paving yourself of the foods that
you enjoy. There are many tasty
low fat food choices available.
Work on making "heart smart"
food choices more often. Choose
lower fat dairy products such as
skim or one percent milk, low
fat yogurt. and partly
skimmed cheeses.
When you eat meat,
remove any visible fat
and use a low fat cook-
ing method like broil -
log or baking.
Being physically ac-
tive is also important
to successful weight
loss and a healthy
heart. Not only does
regular physical activi-
ty, help to maintain a
healthy body weight, but it also
contributes to a sense of well-
being.
Too many people confuse
physical activity with strenuous

Day', last year the Sneaker
Police were called to several total
businesses to make sure everyone
was wearing their sneakers.
Those caught out of unifomn ei
Mel had to skip or, for the more
physically fit, get down on the
floor and do pushups.
"I thought that was great, a lot of
people got into it,” said Farquhar.
Sneaker Day is on Friday, May
22, so beware of the Sneaker Po-
lice.
May 27 is Physical Activity Day
and besides the corporate challenge
on that day, Exeter East Will be
able to challenge Exeter East to see
which part of the town's population
walks the best.
Just go for a`Walk'tfetween 6:30
and 7:30 p.m. and register your
name at the corner of Main and

Main, register at the library while
those who live west of Main Street
can record their name in front of

Another activity planned for Fit-
ness Week is on Thursday, May 28

be offering a free adult swim from

it's a fairly inexpensive method to
keep fit, all you need is a good pair
of shoes and appropriate clothing.
A couple of weeks ago, the
young roller bladers showed how to
stay fit for hockey without ice.
Roller binding doesn't seem to be a
fad as many are doing it.
The economy may be putting a
pinch on us all, but Farquhar says it
looks as though nearly everyone is

Zurich vows not to
be caught napping
in Hensall fitness
challenge May 27
ZURICH - Hensall and Zurich
will be going head to head on May
27 _as each community tries to
prove to the other they are the
:hodthier of the two.
Hensall had challenged -Zurich to
the Participaction Challenge and
Zurich council Thursday evening
wanted some assurance from their
organizer, councillor Dwayne La-
porte, that their village would not
be on the losing side.
Laporte assured council that not
only was he organizing a 15 -minute
exercise session- at the arena at 7
p.m. that evening, he wouldalso be
personally taking calls all day from
residents who had met the 15 -
minute activity requirement earlier
in the day.
The goal of the challenge is to get
the largest Percentage of the village
populations out exercising that day.
Laporte told council his phone
number is 236-7277 for those who
could noe be at the arena, but he
cautioned that "every councillor
had better be.dowm there"
So we want people to do some
exercising, it doesn't natter what
kind of exercising,"' noted council-
lor Barb Jeffrey.
"I've got to wear a Hensall hat all
week if we lose," said Fisher, to
which Laporte said not to worry.
Hensall residents, however, are
not expected to face the challenge
sitting down. After three years of
dividing the village in two to deter-
mine whether the north or south.
side of Hensall is the more fit, the
challenge has been extended to an-
other municipality.
The question remains, is Zurich
up to the challenge?
