EXETER - 1t may still be junior
baseball, but for four local players
its a big step tip.
Pitcher Scot Russell and catcher
David Schwindt who played for the
Exeter Co -Op Juniors, along with
pitchers Derek and Dan Masse
from Dashwood, have joined the
Stratford Hitters of the Inter
County Junior Baseball League.
The Hitters play a 28 -game
schedule and travel, by team bus, to
Cambridge, St. Thomas, Wood-
stock,- Brantford, Kitchener -Water-
loo and Guelph.
They lost their opening game of
lthe season last week, but bounced
:back to beat St. Thomas, the de -
_tending league champs.
"It's more competitive. You play
to win,-not-jest.to have fun," said
Russell who pitches, plays short-
stop and once. in a while patrols the
outfield.
His younger -brother Mark, with
the.Exeter Co -Op Juniors, was also
asked—to 'play for :dee Hitters .but
turned it downsbotuuse he willrbe
doing a lot of:umpiring in town this
summer.
There are 23 players.on.the Mill-
ers roster but Russell staid Jae .las

a single,..double:and:triple as:the
. Exeter Minor Tyke 11 team beat vis-
king:Clinton 15 -9 -Thursday night.
Thee are. three minor tyke trims
in the.Eaeter MinorBaseball Asso-
niation, this age group is for players
7-9 years -old.
This is a &e -pitch .league which
means the coasches:pitch.to.the bat-
ters.
Besides .DeajardBae, Adam -Little

a single:and. he scored two runs.
-Tony Ensiled three base hits while

"Junior ball in Exeter is Junior
'D'," he said of the teams' Ontario
Baseball Association rating,
"Over there [Stratford], the first
place warn is 'A'.''
In both of the games, Schwindt
has seen action.
"1 caught one game and played
left field which was a little bizarr;."
Two -hitter: Lucan pitcher Sean
Lumley allowed just two tuts over -
five innings Monday night as the
South beat the North in a Western
Junior Baseball League all-star
game.
The only :hits he gave up were a
single in the second inning to
Goderich's Chad Pappleand a base
hit in the fifth frame to Clinton's
Ben Lobb.
Lumley .had some :good .defense
behind him :as Luaan _ eammate
Cory Burtch made a :diving shoe-
string catchitrthethirdinning.
