Ontario Minister of Agriculture
addresses new college graduates

nology graduation ceremony held
on .Thursday appropriately includ-
ed the Honourable Elmer Bucha-
nan, Minister of Agriculture and
Food tor Ontario, as graduation
.guest speaker.
The Minister addressed the stu-
dents giving them hope for their fu-
ture despite the hard economic
times facing the industry and de-
-atxibedehhc-calege as "a fine exam-
ple of cooperation between an ed-
ucational institution and the
community it runts."
Buchanan also outined to the stu-
dents the latest strategies of the
provincial government to mach out
to the provincial and intonational
markets. The minister emphasized
the "reaching out" by the govern-
ment not only to consumers but
also to the international community
as well as the importance of Onta-
rio residents to work co-operatively
toward a better future.
The provincial governmern, says
Buchanan, is in suppon of multina-
tional trade and will continue em-
phasizing its campaign to buy On-
tario, home grown, fresh products
to support the economy.
"We would like to restore the
dignity of living in and growing up
in a rural community," said Bucha-
nan referring to the farming sectors
want for self reliance rather than
government financial dependence.
As a member of the. cabinet com-
mittee for environmental issues, the
minister spoke of the prov-
inces "increased respossibithy to
the environment" to take care of
soil and water for the future s
of the graduates in the farming sec-
tor.
- He said that in order to reach the
goals outlined, the province will
need le work together using "for-
ward thinking" to help it 20 yearn
down the road. "In short,,' he said,
"we need the graduates we see here
today.,
