Police Week begins with awards to students and supporters EXETER - May 10-16 is being promoted as Police Week in Cana- da and the Exeter Town Police have already begun several events to mark the occasion. Monday morning, the police awarded prized to the winners of a recent Stay Alert/Stay Safe poster contest. This streetproofing pro- gram, touted by cartoon celebrities Bert and Gert, was presented in classrooms at both Exeter Public School and Precious Blood School by co-op students working with the police. Prizes for the winners were pre- sented by the Exeter Canadian Tire Store. Police chief Jack Harkness also presented two cettifrr-ates of appre- ciation to organizations which he said have been invaluable to the po- lice force's community programs. Terri Schwartzentruber received one award on behalf of Canadian Tire, -which, in addition to the above mentioned Stay Alert/Stay Safe sponsorship, have also provid- ed personal safety handout tips, in- store displays, streetproofing vide- os, Bert and Gert costumes for promotions, and assisted with local bicycle safety programs. Snowbirds finale at 'Bend air show Gerald Merner received the sec- ond certificate on behalf of the Op- timists who have assisted with bi- cycle safety rodeos, the purchase of a VCR monitor for the police to show crime prevention videos in the community, and have also pro- vided financial assistance and help for various youth -related programs. Harkness said the police applaud the support of those organizations for their efforts in aiding the force with its community relations. Co -Op students Tiffany Tryon and Dan Masse, both from South Huron District Hjgh School will be continuing their work in updating keyholder/emergency contact card information with retailers and busi- , nesses throughout police week. The information -cards aid police in contacting keyholders of private. buildings -in cases of emergency af- ter business hours. Police Week first became an an- nual event in 1970 when it was an- trounced in -Regina. `Since'then Po- lice Week has gone on to become an annual celebration and opportu-t nity for improving community awareness about policing in large and small forces across the country. GRAND BENI) Plans for Grand Bend's air show were made public last week, and the event promises to be a dramatic change of pace for the lakeshore communi- ty. The stars of the May 26 show are expected to be the Snowbirds aerobatic team. Asa taste of things to come, Ter- ry Stuart of Terryair performed some of his st4l 4nown lerobatics in a biplane Pit Special for the ben- efit of a press conference at the Oakwood Inn Thursday afternoon. Stuart will also be one of the fea- tured pertbrmers in the show. While the show begins at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, the Snowbird picots will have by then completed only the first part of a lengthy agenda which marks their visit to the area. The Snowbirds are Canada's offi- cial air demonstration squadron. Pilots will be visiting several lo- cal schools, including Grand Bend Public School, Mt. Cantel Separ- ate School, Stephen Central School, and Exeter Public School. Snowbird team leader Bob Stephan of Moosejaw will also be visiting Hensell Public School that morning to recognize the community where his father went to school. Tom Johnston, representing the Air Show committee explained that the eventios*eceived support from several oia''eiste sponsors and or- ganizations, as 'MI u co-operation from both the Canadian and Ameri- can Coast Guards. He promised it would be "a day to remember for all in Grand Bend." The show, said Lawson, will also include the flight of a Harvard, L - 16s (light aircraft of Korean War vintage), and even a World War II Spitfire with pilot Gerry Billings. The show is hoped to be opened by F-16 fighter jets, and closed with the Snowbirds finale. "Our whole show is based on safety. Its whole structure is safe- ty," said Lawson, adding that a one -mile "sterile" zone will be kept off Grand Bend's shore, above which the aircraft will perform. A sound system Will be broad- casting the evening's events to the expected 15-20,000 people at the beach event, which will also feature a parachute drop from a DC -3. Tickets are also being sold on a public reception after the show at the Oakwood Inn, which will offer patrons a chance to get autographs signed by the Snowbird pilots, who will be leaving Huron Park the Wednesday morning. "It has been fun and it's coming together exceptionally well. We've -got a great bunch of volunteers," said Lawson of the organizers of the "premier" event.
