Ing. Women In Spons.
Don't get down on us me-
dia types because it's not
really our fault. First off
while women are competing
in many sports, they are not
at a high calibre.
1'd love to see a professten-
al women's basketball League
or even ringette -boosted to
its highest possible level.
Back in the late 1940's and part of the 1950's there were
professional women's baseball leagues. I wonder how much
ink those teams got in their respective cities?
Unfortunately we have- to -examine why there .are no prof'iss-
sional women sports leagues. And upon examination, the rea-
son is simple.
Except for beach volleyball, women do not create the physi-
cal excitement that others want to sit, observe, cheer and be-
come big fans of.
-List *Mandl attendedi^ litotographei's seminar in Belle-
ville and one of our.assignments was to go out and take ran-
dom pictures, people doing anything.
-Susan Oxford from the Huron Expositor in Seaforth and I
;Came across a group of youngsters taking advantage of the
4aunny weather and playing football.
They were all the same age, 10, 11, 12 thereabouts and they
°'were having a dandy time. I took a few pictures, talked to the
-kids and left.
-later that night when we were looking at some of the pho-
oos'we had taken over the day, my football picture came up
'laud there was this 'perfectly extended leg kicking a football
lust like a pro.
When I commented it was a girl that was showing up her
',male friends, l was greeted with a "so what', attitude from my
:fellow photographers.
One gentleman quickly pointed auto me that the Canadian
#women's°hockey team was Doming off another very success-
-tut -tournament.
-A-federal:task force recently completed a huge report which
outlines a few flaws in'the=warwe Canadians follow sports.
rrkmong the ideas being vitt -forth are less government in-
-woolve:nem, more emphasis on community sports programs .to
:develop athletes and more support for -women.
'Well, I wouldlike to know how we give morepoxt.Lct 4-
male:athletes, especially when male dominated.ttports.ate:cori-
stantly in the headlines?
Simply, we can't.
But what we can do however, as the media, is to do our very
best to bring female sports to the centra; of attention whenever
possible.
Thursday afternoon I asked Michelle Ellison who is working
iirlhb T-A-this'summer. to see if she could. get me:.aisieture of
.girls playing soccer.
In fact, I even suggested going:lo>rctice where there are
-boys and girls and just take glues .df lite girls. Ignore the
toys and focus on what the girls are doing.
Michelle was, and still is, a very fine athlete and no doubt she
.can appreciate what women have to go through just to get a
.few lines in the paper or a couple of seconds of air time at 6
p.m.
Look around, the outstanding female athletes are out there.
Lynne Farquhar and Deb Lord are just a couple that come to
my mind. But there are also others like Tina Campbell, Jodie
.Laporte, Leanne Dietrich and Molly McClure.
-"They have excelled at more than one sport and for the most
point are unnoticed. We have to change that.
It's too bad these women have to come in second when fight-
ing to be recognized.
We know they are out there but most of the time they won't
toot their own whistle.
Well, ladies, I'm listening.
