Thalltilliplailsok is coming to Ontario's gardens, says Mike Miller of
the LaMNIVIORMObry at St. Joseph.
The small evergreens that characterized typical Canadian gardens are
giving way to more elaborate topiary. Miller says he is stocking a variety of
new shapes in the neatly trimmed shrubs, as well as a few of the Intriguing
grafted items.
"Anything that's dwarf, or an unusual shape always goes over well," says
Miller.
Miler also tt7bk7rttoura liewinter on waterfalls and the use of nat-
ural stone in gardens. This is also part of a trend toward the use of more
natural materials by gardening enthusiasts.
"Instead of interlocking brick, there's,going to be more flagstone," he
said.
These influences are coming from western Europe, especially England,
which has traditionally favoured more random, natural designs, than the
formal, geometrical designs of Italy or France.
Aside from flagstone patios, the use of marble Is on the rise, says Miller.
The rock is being quarried in the Bruce Peninsula and will likely be one of
the favoured materials for Ontario's backyards this year.
The stonework provides the "hard" edges in the garden, with the plants
and shrubbery leaning towards a softer look than in the past.
"The Europeans are way ahead of us,' acknowledges Miller of landscape
design trends. "But it's a trend that's coming."
As for the beds themselves, Miller says perennial gardens are still very
popular, either to mature by themselves over the years, or to complement
annuals.
"People have to have a perennial garden," predicts Miller.
In addition to topiary, gardeners are also favouring small, flowering
shrubs over evergreens to flank walkways and patios.
Another trend, while less natural but still showing a strong European in-
fluence, is a renewed interest in concrete statuary. Lakewood Nursery Is
stocking a variety of statues, birdbaths and sundials to meet this demand.
Also popular are the waterfalls that can either stand by themselves or
grace the increasingly popular garden ponds.
With temperatures slowly rising to more normal -spring-like" levels, Miller
expects there to be a burst of interest in landscaping products as garden-
ers spend more time outdoors.
"Everybody's keen to get in the garden," he said.
This is the twetfth year Lakewood Nursery has been serving its custom-
ers from the Highway 21 location at St. Joseph.

and baby Lisa at Lakewood Nursery, a family business.
