Don Boyes with one of Troy Built's new Chipper Vacs.
Huron Tractor seeing demand
for new garden products
At the home and garden shows where Huron Tractor has had ex-
hibits in the past few weeks, Don Boyes says one of the main areas of in-
terest has been in garden products that recycle organic material.
Chipper/shredding devices, and mulching attachments for lawn
mowers are two of the items that are beginning to have'great appeal for the
urban homeowner.
While farmers do occasionally buy chipper/shredders, Boyes
notes that where landfill space is at a premium, urban homeowners are be-
coming very conscious of where their yard waste ends up.
"The overall thing is composting," explains figyes. Whether the
aim-isto mulch leaves up into quickly compostablanuestiaLor to grind
lawn clippings so fine they are absorbed into the turf, or whether the gar-
dener plans to turn dead branches and cuttings into wood chips for the
flower beds, the end result is the same - less garbage for the landfill.
Mulching lawn rrlowers do away with the bagging or ejection ports
for clippings. Instead, a closed deck re -circulates grass clippings over a
special blade that chops and re -chops them until they fitter into the turf.
Boyes explains that Huron Tractor offers both Troy -Birt and John Deere
mowers that approach the mulching issue in different ways. Both -have
their advantages.
The John Deere mowers can be converted back to regular bag
collection, a useful feature when the grass has grown too long after a vaca-
tion to be successfully mulched.
"You can't let it get too long. You have to have a commitment to
mulching," notes Boyes.
While mulching mowers have been around for a while, chipper/
shredders are attracting a lot of attention these days. Troy-Bitt makes ma-
chines in three, five, and eight horsepower to tackle most yard needs.
However, a new Troy -Birt product, called the Chipper Vac is breaking new
ground in the market. This machine resembles a large lawn mower, and is
able to pick up dry and even wet leaves for mulching, ready for the com-
poster. It also has a chute for small limbs.
Boyes said the machine is so intriguing that Huron Tractor plans
to put into use as a demonstrator in the next few weeks.
The Chipper Vacs start at $549 and range up to $1,549 for full -
power models. Chipper/Shredders start at $699 and go up from there de-
pending on power and size.
Mulching mowers can be as simple as four -horsepower push
units, or as sophisticated as a riding tractor with attachments for nearly
every kind of yard work.
Huron Tractor stocks a full range of all models.
