Johnson speaks at banquet
DASHWOOP - Former Olympic figure skater Lyn-
don Johnson delighted a large crowd at the Dashwood
Community Centre on Sunday as he was the guest
speaker for the Zurich and Area Figure Skating Club's
annual awards night.
Johnson, who competed for Canada in both the 1984
and 1988- Olympics said figure skating is changing
very quickly.
"The calibre from 1984 to 1988 was a lot different. It
was stronger," he said.
With the help of technicians and psychologists every
country tries to get the edge over the next. All wanting
the best results for their skaters.
"We were one of the fust schools to work with sports
psychologists and boy did we get the looks," said John-
son.
The 1988 Olympics brought a great deal of world-
wide recognition for figure skating with such Canadian
superstars as Elizabeth Manley and Brian Orser.
Sunday's dinner was pot luck and Johnson, who invit-
ed everyone to go for a jog after supper, said it was like
being at home.
"This reminds me of my hometown in Manitoba. The
food was great, just like at home."
Johnson was asked several questions from the audi-
ence about off-season training.
Taking home awards from the Zurich Figure Skating dinner on Sunday were, front, left; Krista
Schilbe, Kristin McIntyre, Carrie Illman. Middle row, left; Jennifer Overholt and Carl Finkbeiner
who made some of the presentations. Back, left; Melissa Timmernmans, Crystal Jones.
Humbey to coach Imperials
EXETER - A year ago, the Exet-
er Royals were one of the power-
houses in the South Perth Men's
Fastball League and it looks like
they are headed for another suc-
cessful season.
There arc a few changes to the
club which reached the league fi-
nals a year ago where they were
eliminated by the Sebringville Jun-
iors.
Exeter Chrysler is sponsoring the
team which will now be called the
Imperials. A few new faces on the
diamond. and .a new coach, Chuck
Humbey.
He spent part of last season
coaching in Shedden and replaces
Fred Cook who takes over the gen-
eral manager duties.
Whether it be fastball or hardball,
pitching is always a concern but it
appears as though the Imperials
Rod Johnston goes after a bunt.
will be solid on the mound. At
Thursday night's practice, Humbey
announced Doug Charlton will join
ace Derwyn Hodgins.
"He's going to sign ,sod .he'll be
with us in the regular season," said
Humbey. "It gives us the added di-
mension of having two good cali-
bre pitchers."
Newcomers to the team, besides
Charlton are shortstop Kris Kunder
and third baseman Kevin Windsor.
The latter swings a big bat and
could take a little pressure off of
sluggers Steve Neil, Graha,n Nes-
bitt, Mike Neil and Brian Noyes.
The Imperials are a large team,
size wise and Humbey said that
could be a problem.
"We have an obvious problem
with speed. We have people who
can hit the ball. We may have to
manufacture a few runs."
Tie Nighthawks: On Sunday, the
Imperials travelled to St. Marys
where they battled the NightHawks
to a 2-2 nine -inning tie.
First baseman Kevin Lightfoot
led the Exeter offence with a pair
of singles and he scored both runs.
Hodgins started on the mound
and worked five innings, giving up
both runs before Charkon took
over.
The Imperials will try and get a
little revenge against the Sebring-
villc Juniors on Thursday when
they meet in Exeter at 9 p.m. for an
exhibition game.
Regular season for Exeter begins
next Thursday when they hoµ .Sl.
Agatha at 9 p.m.
Baseball
Rookie ball coming to Exeter
By Fred
Groves
EXETER -
Rookie ball
could be
coming to
the Exeter
Minor Base-
ball Associa-
tion.
Thursday night at a meeting of
coaches and managers, association
president Brad Gregus introduced
rookie ball which will be for eight
year-olds who normally would
hawk been playing five -pitch.
The difference between the two
approaches to the game, is that roo-
kie -ball will see batters going head -
to -teed with a pitching machine.
In five -pitch, it is customary for
an adult coach to do the pitching.
"1t gives them consistent pitch-
ing. _We've _tried it out .and they
think "it's Vie greatest thing in the
world," said Gregus.
He said last year, a five -pitch
team from Goderich was formed
late in the season using a pitching
machine and they won the provin-
cial championship.
Also at Thursday's meeting, he
was pleased to announce there will
be nearly 45 parent -volunteers as-
sisting the 200 players in many ca-
pacities from coaching and manag-
ing to fundraising.
This year's EMBA will
throe T -hall, two five -pitch, two
Vice, one peewee, two bantam and
a junior team under i,t'S wings.
Several different resources will
be available to coaches this year in-
cluding a drills manual distributed
on Thursday. There are also in-
structional video tapes.
"All of us here are fans of the
game but pone pf us are experts"
The EMBA will also have at-
tained Steve Meaner as it's techni-
cal director. Merner, is a member
of the Exeter Express senior base-
ball team.
"He's going to run four mini clin-
ics for us. Hell pick one or two
subjects for each clinic."
Express prepare: Although the
Exeter Express Senior Baseball
Club were supposed to play their
first game against Lakeside on Sun-
day, that has been postponed but
the local team will be ready any-
way.
Joe Fulop returns to coach the
team even though he said at the end
of last season he was retiring. Fu -
lop said the reason he is back is be-
cause there seems to be a big com-
mitment for the team.
Pitching seems to be the strength
-ef--the 1992 Express as they will
have more than ten guys who can
throw from the mound.
"The more you get, the better off
you are," said Fulop.
Starting rotation will include
righthanders Kevin Drager, Marty
Merner and Rick Boone along with
lefue Paul Elston.
Boone comes over from the Sea -
forth Merchants which folded. He
will help the team a great deal as
Fulop said he can play any posi-
tion.
have Other new faces on the diamond
include shortstop Bill Glover and
outfilderRon Elliott both of the
Exeter hockey Mohawks along
with infielders -Will Sentjens, Dave
Russell pitcher/outfielder Jim Kel-
ler, pitcher/outfielder Fred Gregus
and infielder Brent O'Brien up from
the Co -Op Juniors and pitcher
Dave Anthill who has returned after
arm surgery.
"We have more pitching than we
did last year and we have more
depth," said Fulop.
Gar Penhalc is the general man-
ager and former player Doug Fair -
balm will also be coaching. The
Express were scheduled to play in-
tcrsquad games last night and again
on Sunday.
