High school sports
Seniors dominate at HP badminton finals
EXETER - South Huron District
High School will be well represent-
ed at the Western Ontario Athletic
Association badminton tournament
in Woodstock later this month.
This weekend, Jason Coolman
and Mark D'Anna will team in
boys' doubles, Carrie Oke and Ker-
ry Manders will be entered in girls'
doubles competition and in the
mixed doubles' it will be Becky
Morgan and Chris Gardner.
All three duos brought home first
place fmishes from the recent Hu-
ron -Perth Conference senior cham-
pionships and also helped the Pan-
thers capture the team title with 34
points.
Centennials will
need more offence
EXETER - The return of Rick Tapp is tthocpeeted to help the Exeter
Centennials this year as the local senior soccer ebb begins its Western
OntarioSoccer League season on 10.
Topp played in the 1st Division a ago,and coach Dick Lord says
he will be a big plus to the team along with Pat Donnelly and Joe Lau-
rie back on defence.
The Centennials are in the 2nd Division along with titre Sarnia
clubs, two from Chatham, Petrolia, Strathroy, Nairn and West London.
.Last summer, Exeter had its problems putting the ball in the net.
"We need to score goals, that's the bottom line," said Lard.
Providing the bulk of the offence will be George McEwen, Gary Wil-
sen.md_Chuck Walker. Craig Winbow is back in goal and last year's
Most Valuable Player Charlie Wise also returns.
Winbow will have to get used to the new rule that states the goalkeep-
er can handle the ball only ewe.
"'They. found the goalkeeper was slowing the game down," said Lord.
Another new rule this year involves offsides.
Players now can be even with their opposition instead of having to be
behind.
"All they are trying to do is open it up for more breaks," said Lord.
"We play without linesmen and it's tough for the referee. I don't see a
big change for us?
Game days for the Centennials will still be on Sunday at the Canners
Field but game time has been changed from 2 to 4 p.m.
