Bernardo combines schooling
with teaching self defence
CREDITON - Karate students of
all ages are taking up the form of
martial arts here weekly at the local
community centre.
Highlighting their program has
been guest appearances by fifth de-
gree black belt, Mike Bernardo.
The Bernardo Karate Academy in
Crediton is nun by instructor Ron
Bowers and students of the acade-
my were recently graded by both
Bowers and Bemardo.
"The need for self defence per-
haps isn't as great as a big city but
it's definitely there," said Bernardo.
While29 white belts were graded
on this particular night, Bowers and
Bernardo also leafed through doz-
ens of manuals which not only
keeps a record of their karate re-
sults but monitors how the younger
onasidain school as well.
"We try and tie it: vt with their
school work. So instead of teaching
just punching and kicking we stress
how they are performing outside of
this [karate) school," said Bernar-
do.
His particular discipline of karate
is Shor-in-yu and among his more
promising students are Colin and
Jo -Dee Grasdahl of Crediton.
The siblings had a chance to as-
sist Bowers and Bernardo during
the grading procedure and Jo -Dee
even sparred against her mother
Pat.
When he is grading the younger
students, Bernardo looks for the ba-
sics.
"At that young age, I'm looking
for their stance. If it's good and
sound, that's a good thing to build
on."
Bernardo has usedhis martial arts
-talents to land amtovie contract in
which he has already done the first
of a series of five movies.
The next registration day for the
Bernardo Karate Academy in Cre-
diton is April 27.
