Sunday afternoon at the South Huron Recreation Centre in Exeter, 27 new umpires were taught some of the basics by Jim Cressman. "I'm not here to teach you umpiring, you can't do that in four hours," said Cressman before the clinic began. He said it takes game experience to build confidence which is one of the key ingredients to working behind the plate or at the bases. Cressman emphasized the game of baseball is fun and should be treated that way by the umpires. "It's not work ball, it's play ball. You have to have fun when you are out there; enjoy yourself." Chessman, a sports writer with the London Free Press, was umpiring in the Eastern AA League in 1975 but the United States Labour Deparunent said he couldn't continue anymore because he was a Canadian. However, that didn't discourage him as he umpired at the 1988 Olympic Games and is now with the Inter County Lemague. "The greatest -thing is meeting other umpires from around the world." He added that baseball rules are the same across the world. Although a lot of umpires are usually out doing a local team, Cressman said it's important tomake sure no one gets= unfair advantage. "You have to take a serious approach because you are the game's repre- sentative " That means dressing like an umpire in a professional manner, not wear- ing cutoffs and T-shirts. Cressman said that helps gain the respects of coaches and spectators. While the professional leaguesare known for arguments between coach- es. players and umpires, Chessman said it's important to keep the confron- tations to a minimal and try and keep participants in the game as much as possible. And whatabout being in control of the game? "You have to be loud and let people two streets down know what's going , on. tiaopires.aneetipgi Anyonet*caested in umpiripg either:hardball or fasiball this summer is asked to attend a meeting at'llie Red -Centre on Thursday at 7 p.m. For more information contact Jerry Keyes 228-6271. iinoi ahocke Pointing out some of the finer points at the umpires' clinic on Sunday was instructor Jim Cressman. Kernick :resigns Continued from page 17 school hockey. [Jeremy] Jemec and (Paull O'Shea arc a forts in Junior 'D', but they get tons of ice time and experience playing for both clubs." "We had more sawing punch and pretty much the same defensive corps, but we couldn't keep the puck out of our net," said Kernick. "I think the injury to Larry Lewis was a serious blow." "It was die beginning of the end." Unfortunately for Exeter, even promising lataseason additions didn't help the club this time around. "You have to be together all year for a solid nucleus. For the Hawks, three of the four late additions were almost no-shows. John O'Hara was a pleasant bonus, but pretty well cvcrythudg else we did to help the team broke it further apart." Before season's end, Exeter signed blueliner Jeff Dalrymple, centre John O'Hara, forward Jim Dickens and goaltencler Jason 13u- kela. But Dalrymple became tied up duc w coaching commiJlne0LS with the Exeter Midget Generals, 1 Dickens injured his knee and goal - tender Jason Buicala was eta no- show. Asked About the prospects of coaching Junior 'D' in Parkhill, Kenrick said he may consider it, but thinks he'll probably go eiRC- where. "1 really enjoy coaching and 1 feel I'd like to give something back to hockey." George Pratt, who acted as co - coach along with Kernick, said he was surprised with Kemick's deci- sion, but would like to return him- self. "I was surprised when he told mc, but I'm sure he's thought it out," said Pratt. "As for mc, right now 1 think 1'd like to codue back."
