The 27 -year-old Lucan resident
spent two full seasons at the helm

"I had aiteolehtes:aelliseeettralid
thought we had two r pretty iplad
teams," said Kernick. "But I4mdis-
appointed we didn't do better."
Kernick played with the Hawks
at age 16 before moving up to the
St. Marys Lincolns at the Junior 'B'
level for four years and then at,-
odter-thrce with the Senior Exeter
Mohawks.
Kemick said this year's team was
one of the strongest on paper, but
something was missing all year
tong that couldn't be generated in
the playoffs.
"Ten or fifteen years:ego_boctey
was everything, no matter what
as I44S coi
level you played at Today, then
deems to be a lot more pressure to
find jobs or work harder at school
to enable the kids to get a good job.

coaches feel the overage players

mo longer•the number one priority,"
said Kernick.
"We had mandatory practice and
were getting nine guys out. We
dealt with that•all year and it reale
put us behind other teams at
playoff time as far as plays are con
earned."
Kernick summed that for the
benefit of ftMIN 'D', the league
must do soutaltiag to make itself
Yowler.
"If"Ateyh+e 'dubbing this the De-
velopment League, then that's what
we shouild -be leaning towards.
Give the kids a chance to taste jun-
ior so if they decide to go Junior 'It
or gel.dratted, they know what it is
all about. Threw the whole ovei
age thing out and maybe affiliate us
further with Exeter's midget team
instead of them have them playing
highschool: said Kernick.
"That way you keep the younger
kids and when you bring a sixteen -
year -old up for his first year, he'll
fit in more and won't be as intimi-
dated. We're going the opposite
way_.and _making -*he league a meds-.

In the second period. Lucan goal-

kept the Hawks off the board.
"Bobby played well and their
goalie played well too," said Free-
man of Hawks netminder Dennis
Scherbarth.
Game Three is in Mitchell at 8:30

Szabo proved why he is the west
division all-star goalie as he stoned
the Centenaires in the sixth game of
.the divisional semi-finals_ Wednes-
day night.
In Seaforth, Szabo backed the
Irish to a 2-0 win and a berth in the
division finals against Mitchell. It
was the veteran netmindees first
shutout of the year and his perfor-
mance was a bit of a surprise con-
sidering he let in seven goals two
nights before.
"We got a couple (of goals] and
than we fell apart," said Szabo of
the 7-4 Irish loss on March 30.
Seaforth finished sixth in the
overall regular season standings but
eliminated third-place Pt. Stanley
Lakers in the first round of the
playoffs.
''hey picked up a few guys and
we knew they'd be tough," said
,Szabo.
Lucan got off to a good start
Wednesday night when defence -
man Chris Chafer dumped Seaforth
forward Danny Wildfong just ten
seconds into the game.
Less than four minutes into the
game. the Irish got on tic seurc-
board first when big Jon Mcbach-
ern cleared a path in front of Dana
Uuskocy and Matthews fued one
high into the net.
With 4:51 left in the opening
[rame, a perfect three-way combi-
nation saw DePrest finish off a
passing combination from Snider
and Paul Woodburn.
That was the only scoring of the
game as neither side could put the
puck in the net the next 40 minutes.
lrgsthe second, Szabo made a huge
save on Wildfong which seem to
lift his spirits.
"It's ray last year and I feel more
confident. No time do I get down
on myself," said Szabo ane of the
Lucan over-agers this year.
Szabo has seen a lot of work in
the playoffs and except for the 7-4
loss hasn't shown many signs of fa -

chunk from Fleeter's feeder system.
Considering how good some of
those midgets were, Kernick feels
the Hawks were definitely hurt.

and midgets is great, but they don't
