Travel can be such an
important part of anyone's
life. To see and hear how
other people live is an ex-
citing education. Too
many people when they
travel don't take the time
or tate nimble to find out
how the
lives and works. We drive
through the streets, but how much do we really see. At meal-
time we choose the most familiar thing on the menu. The maid
who cleans th. room or the wafter who brings the drinks or
who takes our dinner orders, what are their lives like? What
seethe sights, sounds and smells of their existence? Maybe we
dlettld begin to wonder, and become citizens of the world tath-
than just travellers through it.
o member travelling when our children were younger. Eat-
igp•was always a trying experience for them. Nothing was the
statue as home, not even the potato chips! I remember well the
five days that they lived on bread, bananas and oranges be-
cause they were the most recognizable foods around. The
cheese was not orange, (we had always up to that point had
coloured old cheeseifl use) and no matter how much we
rajoledihan,-they would not even taste it. (MacDonald's had
not yet reached the areas we were visiting.) They survived and
so did we. Thankfully now they are far more ready to accept
new things and at least try them.
Chinese food is something that we have all developed a lik-
ing for, not just the North American versions of the Cantonese
chow mems, but also the hot and spicy foods from Szechwan
and the unusually flavoured foods from Swatow. One of these
specialities is satay beef, something easy to serve from a bar-
becue or the oven.
