offered in Exeter
EXETER - Improving parent-
child relationships will be the focus
of a series of discussion sessions
,beginning 7:30 p.m., April 8 at the
:Exeter Hospital (in the Board-
= -room). The program is -being spon-
sored. by Women Today, according
to. Beth Fulton the project coorditta-
-aWr.
"The discussions will be based on
Systematic Training for Effective
Parenting (STEP), one of the most
widely used parenting education
programs in the continent. More
than two million people throughout
the United States, Canada and other
countries have participated in STEP
discussion groups and used the ac-
companying Parent's Handbook
since 1976.
STEP encourages mutual respect
between parent and child, increased
cooperation, more effective com-
munication, and a more responsi-
ble, self-reliant.allitude among chil-
dren. Locally, .ihe Huron -Perth
Centre for Children and Youth,
'Children's Aid Society, Women To-
day, the Health Unit and others
have used this program to promote
parenting skills.
The idea of parenting education
is a growing phenomenon, spon-
sored by hundreds of diverse
groups and organizations and par-
ticipated in by thousands of indi-
viduals across the country.
In a U.S. national survey.. the par-
-rents who took part in STEP groups
.said they found the program be nefr-
:.cial for many reasons. High on the
list was the opportunity it provided
for them to share experienceswnd
Aram from others. Some . STEEP
Anders spokee-of networks ;of par-
ents that -had -grown up -focally
around the program. Others said
that STEP enabled parents to "earn
new ways to handle persisteatjwob-
lems", "to get in touch.aaitlrltteir
feelings and their child's", and to
overcome a sense of guilt and de-
velop a sense of confidence and
self-esteem.
STEP was also credited for im-
proving participants' relationships
with other people, • including hus-
bands and wives, employers and
employees. Benefits cited for chil-
ydren included the opportunity for
children to take more responsibility
for their own behaviour, a calmer,
more relaxing environment in
which to develop emotionally, and
less spanking and parent "snooper -
vision".
The fee for this course is $25 for
an individual and $30 for a couple.
This includes $15 for the handbook
and inerneseiginancial assistance
available if necessary.

coming STEP program in Exeter
