"This is the first time gasolines blended .with ethanol have been made widely available in Ontario for use by the general public," said UPI Chairnian D.G. (Doug) MacK- enzie. The new environfriendlier fuels are expec.. , be the first in major Ontario markets to meet the new specifications for oxygenated gasolines and eligible for: the EcoLogo. The EcoLogo is carried on approved products which help reduce the burden on the envi- ronment. "We've been working to intro- duce ethanol for some time," said MacKenzie. United Co-operatives of Ontario (UCO) test -marketed ethanol Wended fuels in 1987 and found consumer acceptance excellent, however the sale ofihe product was .0:discontinued due to the ,cost and lifliculty of sourcing ethanol. "In- - cenlives (for producing ethanol - blended fuels) initially provided by the provincial government and now offered in the recent federal budget were_a big help in making This pro- ject economically viable," added MacKenzie. Broader use of ethanol -Wended fuels in Ontario, could provide a market for 20 percent of the prov- ince's corn crop. In .the future, UCO Petroleum Inc. ma introduce an ethanol - blended ucl designed to compete with reg unleaded gasoline. Howey , the Exeter Co-op gas bar will not be one of the 19 gas bars a eoloying the fuel in the int mediate future.
