MISSISSAUGA - UCO Petrole-
um Inc. •(UPI) has announoed that
ethanol -blended gasoline will be
available at 19 Southwestern Onta-
rio Co-op gas bars starting in•May.
"This is the first time gasolines
blended .with ethanol have been
made widely available in Ontario
for use by the general public," said
UPI Chairnian D.G. (Doug) MacK-
enzie.
The new environfriendlier fuels are expec.. , be
the first in major Ontario markets
to meet the new specifications for
oxygenated gasolines and eligible
for: the EcoLogo. The EcoLogo is
carried on approved products which
help reduce the burden on the envi-
ronment.
"We've been working to intro-
duce ethanol for some time," said
MacKenzie.
United Co-operatives of Ontario
(UCO) test -marketed ethanol
Wended fuels in 1987 and found
consumer acceptance excellent,
however the sale ofihe product was
.0:discontinued due to the ,cost and
lifliculty of sourcing ethanol. "In-
- cenlives (for producing ethanol -
blended fuels) initially provided by
the provincial government and now
offered in the recent federal budget
were_a big help in making This pro-
ject economically viable," added
MacKenzie.
Broader use of ethanol -Wended
fuels in Ontario, could provide a
market for 20 percent of the prov-
ince's corn crop.
In .the future, UCO Petroleum
Inc. ma introduce an ethanol -
blended ucl designed to compete
with reg unleaded gasoline.

bar will not be one of the 19 gas

mediate future.
"We won't have it because we
aren't part of. the UCO," said Max
Dawson of the Heamall Co-op.
