Friday evening, seven top high-school competitors from as tar away as Guelph, Kitchener, and Belwood, did their best to impress judges from the London Toastmasters in both a 5-7 min- ute prepares speech, and a 2-3 minute impromptu talk. The category with the most compotities was the Senior Boys English das with three competi- tors, imarnilw Exeter's own Rob Mizzi. The overall winner was Aa- ron Musial from Belwood. Sandra Coulus, sponsored by the Bayfield Lions, won the Senior Exeter's Rob Mal speaks during Friday's high school public speaking contest hosted the Exeter Lions Club. Girls English title against a Kitchener rival. Kevin Krudwig of Guelph and Denise Mader of lnnerkip won the uncontested Senior Boys French and Junior Girls English categories, respectively. All winners will be going on to represent District 15 at the up- coming finals in Toronto. "These competitions have probably been. running .S0 years," explained Exeter Lions president John Stephens Friday evening. Stephens also pointed out that while this is the second year run- ning that Exeter has hosted the effective speaking contest, they are normally rotated around the district, but the Exeter facility. has proven popular with the or- ganization. NOM 1X0 Candidates selected for interviews will be notified by April 13, 1992 Lucan employees to participate in "roadeo" Those interested LUCAN - At the March 17 meet- ing of village council, works super- intendent Doug Johnston reported • that some of his employees were in- terested in participating in a "Safety Truck Roadeo" to be held on Thursday, May 28 The Roadeo sponsored by the El- gin -Middlesex -Oxford Road Super- intendent Associations is intended to improve the knowledge and skills of equipment operators and drivers. The written test will help drivers understand the changes in various regulations and the field tests will simulate some of the problems they might encounter in the operation of equipment. The roadeo will be held at the Ministry of Transportation Ontario yard on Highway 135 in London. In minutes of the latest Lucan Community Centre meeting it was reported that the Lucan Optimists are stning a Home and Garden Show oil hmic 5,6 and 7. They have booked the main hall and possibly the ice surface. Rates have been increased for banquets in the arena main hall by $25, plus an extra $25 surcharge for events with more than 300 peo- ple. Rates for the Leprechaun Hall and sports rentals of the main hall will remain as is. This will put weekend rentals of the main hall for banquets and dances at $350, still the most eco- nomical in the area for similar facil- ities Ice rental rates arc being adjust- ed effective September 1, 1992. Minor hockey and figure skating will pay $68 per hour for Prime time and $52 per hour for non- prime time. Other than the two aforementioned groups, local users -Par-$67 aper -trout -apd ode -- users will be charged $77 per hour. Lucan seniors LUCAN - The Seniors group of Lucan met at the Scout`hall March 19, 1992. Gordon Clubb opened the meet- ing with the memuers singing 0 tpnada. Our secretary was absent so Mabel Needham read the min- utes of the last meeting. They wore adopted as read. Many Happy Birthday legs were offered to Keri Kyle, Verna Ibbotson and Florence Hodgins. Harry Noels gave the report of the Euchreama held last week. Due to the inclement weather the crowd was smaller than expected, al- though people came from St. Mar- ys, Parkhill and Ilderton. There were 12 tables and $64 went to the club and S60 went to Tri County Games. The next meeting of Tri County Games will be in Dashwood.
