Exeter Hawks gotta have heart, trail Mitchell 2-0

EXETER - If you look deep
enough you can probably find 101
excuses for the Exeter Hawks to be
in the predicament they're in. The
locals currently trail the Mitchell
Hawks 2-0 in their OHA Develop-
ment League west division semi-
final, but the feeling among the
majority is that the team needs to
be injected with some heart.
"I honestly don't think there was
anyone out there tonight that really
waated to win," 'said a very disillu-
sioned coach John Kernick after
Sunday's 5-2 loss. "I guess atti-
tudes change."
Exeter was soundly defeated in
every aspect of the game Sunday,
placing -them in dire need of a win
Friday at home.
"Maybe they're a little overconfi-
dent after beating Lambeth," said
co -coach George Pratt. "But they
better wake up soon because Friday
is a must win."
In fairness to the squad, they are
suffering from some heavy casual-
ties, although no one seems to want
to pick up the slack.

maert is suffering with a bad back,

tied at one game each

SEAFORTH - The Seaforth
Centenaires may be playing good
hockey, but the Lucan Irish are also
not playing up to their potential.
Sunday night in Seaforth, the
Irish squeezed out a 2-1 overtime
win to tie their best -of -seven OHA
Junior f5evelopment west division
semi-final series at a game each.
Game Three is Wednesday in Lu -
can at 8:00 p.m. Seaforth won the
opening game 6-3 in Lucan on Fri-
day.

"I think the win will pick us beck
up," said Irish captain Andy Ross.
Lucan seems to be missing that
old Irish spirit they are known for.
both Ross and coach Ken Needham
agree the Centenaires are surprising
them.
"We've taken them very lightly.
that's the bottom line. said Ross.
Needharn seemed pleased after
Jason Wilson scored the winning
goal with just 1:51 left in the 10 -
minute num-sudden death-ovdiione
period.
But he slid his teeny is sot totally
prepared to face the Cantenaires.
1 don't know whether or not
they're taking those gays\ lightly or
not?, said Needham. "We've bad
some light practices with poor at-
tendance."
Needam added the Irish were
without several key players Sunday
including Jon McEachern, Greg
Muir, Brad Bowers, Dan Brand and
Jeremy Jemec but he said it
shouldn't make a big difference.
On Sunday, the Irish had five
first period powerplays including
one two-man advantage for 33 sec-
onds but could not score.
Lucan could not get their sticks
on the puck all night.
"They play the body well.
They're a good defensive team. I
don't think were getting enough
shots on net," said Wilson.
The Irish at times showed signs
of mental weakness. In the first pe-
riod, Darren Neil hauled down Ja-
mie Ramer and was sent to the box
while Lucan was on a powerplay.
With 1:22 left in regulation play,
Tim Hayter was sent to the box for
playing with an illegal stick: The
 Dana Duskocy
out out couldn't on
Bob Szabo.
Seven minutes into the second
period, Seaforth opened the scoring
when Jeff Buck scored off of a cor-
ner pass. With 5:52 left in the mid-
dle frame. Neil tied it up after he
took a pass from Wilson. wrapped
around the net and shat at close
range on Du skocy's short side.
The Centenaires bounced one off
the boards late in the third period
and it went into the net but referee
Claude Daw had whisked the play
dead.
In overtime, Wilson waited.at the
side of the net to score the winner.
"I broke to the far side and Eddie
(VanKakoerle) fed it over," staid
-Wilson asf'ahe goal. -".-1 shot -at
the net and it bounced off his (Dus-
cocky's) Peds."
Centenaires 6, Irish 3
Lucan fired only 22 shots at Ja-
son Pethick, only • three in the sec-
ond period.
It was 2-1 after the rust .period
for the Seaforth in Friday's gine in
Liman. The visions doubled that af-
ter 40 minutes.
Scoring for the winners were
Paul McLwain with two, Buck,
Danny Wildfong, Jeff Gemmell,
and Istrsten Carroll. Answering for
the Irish were Paul Woodburn,
VanKerkoerele and Ross.

_Larry Lewis is gone for the season
with an injured knee, while John
Bell is nursing a groin injury. Add
to that the fact that overager Jeff
Dalrymple missed Sunday's game
due to coaching commitments with
the RSD midget Generals who are
currently battling Clinton in the
OMHA all -Ontario finals.
The only bright spot is that the
Generals may have polished off
Clinton last night. But if the mid-
gets lost, their next game is sched-
uled for Saturday night, the same
time the Hawks are to travel too
Mitchell for game four.
Up front, Exeter has lost their
other 2verager Jim Dickens, out
with fluid on the, knee, while none
of the big guns seem to want to fill
the void.
Mitchell 5, Exeter 2
Mitchell opened the scoring Sun-
day night just four minutes in when
Trevor Harmer waltzed into the
slot, picked up a rebound and
snapped a wrist shot past gifaltend-
er Clint McCann.
Mitchell then added two more be=
fore John Bell got the Hawks roll-
ing in the third period.
With Andrew Barton and Paul
Manders creating a commotion in
front of the Mitchell net, Bell
cruised into the slot and buried a
slapshot past a startled Dennis
Scherbarith.
After the visitors regained their
three -goal lead, John O'Hara scored
his first of the playoffs to keep Ex-
eter in the game. Ray Cousineau
fed Steve Vandenberk at the point
and his ice -level blast was upped
home by O'Hara.
But that was as close as they
would come as Mitchell burned Ex-
eter for a shorthanded goal just
when the locals fatally showed
some life.
- • Series Opener
The- penalty gremlin was at his
best last Tuesday night as the Exet-
er Hawks were nipped 5-3 by their
Mitchell . namesakes in the first
game of their OHA best -of -seven
series at Mitchell.
The Hawks spent nine minutes
• shorthanded in the third period
alone which virtually cost them any
type of a comeback.
Exeter opened the scoring at the
eight -minute mark of the first peri-
od when defenseman Dave Dalrym-
ple pinched from the blueline and
drove a loose puck past Mitchell
goaltender Jason Brooks.
Mitchell tied the game in the dy-
ing seconds of the opening frame
with Exeter defenseman Nathan
Blight off for cross-checking, and

took the lead in the second on an-
other powerplay after John Bell
was issued a double minor.
Mitchell added another before
Derek Shackleton scored in the
third with Exeter enjoying the man
advantage.
With Mitchell leading 4-2, Exeter
centre John O'Hara collided with
goaltender Brooks and was prompt-
ly issued a five-minute major for
interference.
Mitchell answered the call with
their third powerplay goal of the
night, but Exeter put up a gritty
stand scoring shorthanded. Shack-
leton fed Shawn Chipchase who
went down the left wing all alone
and beat Brooks with a slapshot to
close out the scoring.
The third game in the series will
go Friday night at 8:30 in Exeter,
followed by a pair of 8 p.m. starts
