Child
Benefit
► The proposed Child Benefit will, if passed by Farlramen;, gc
out to over 3 million Canadian families starting in January 1992
► The proposed Child Benefit will replace today s patchwory
of measures — Family Allowances, Child Tax Credit ane.
Dependent Child Credit — with one monthly payment
► The proposed Child Benefit will go to those families witr
children who need it — those with low and modest incomes
What's more, it is based on family income, which is a fairer wa,,
of determining the amount of assistance that children actually
need. The proposed Child Benefit will include an earned -income
supplement to increase support for low-income working families
► The proposed Child Benefit will increase federal support for
children by $2.1 billion over 5 -years. For example, a family witr
one child, earning $20,000, can receive as much as $1,733 per
year — an increase of 40%.
What's more, it would be tax-free — you wouldn't be taxed or
the proposed Child Benefit!
► Once fully in place, the proposed monthly Child Benefit earl
respond to changing family circumstances, such as the birth of a
child.
► The proposed Child Benefit will automatically be sent to you
each month. If youfile a tax return, there's no need to apply
unless you have a change in family circumstances. At tax time.
as well, you would find your tax return easier to prepare.

Harold Kushner, the author of
"When Bad Things Happen to
good People", tells of a rabbi
who came home one day and
found his nine year old daughter
crying. The rabbi .asked. "What
is wrong?" Between her sobs,
the daughter told her father that
she and her friends had been
playing a game of hide and seek.
When it was her tum to hide,
she hid so well her friends could
not find her. They gave up and
went off to play another game.
She waited and waited and wait-
ed. Finally, she came out and
found herself all alone.
As the rabbi comforted his
daughter he said to himself - "is
this how God feels sometimes?"
. When we think God is so well
hidden that we give up looking
and go offlii. another directior ,

doned?

or pain even the most faithful

person might say, "My Ood,
where are you?"
The church is the vehicle - im-
perfect and flawed as it is - it is
the vehicle Jesus created to an-
swer that most basic Question
and to help people in their
search for God.
That is not to say the church
has all the answers. When some-
one says, "I've thought about go-
ing to' church, but its so full of
petty, small-minded hypocrits"
we must resist the temptation to
say, "That's all right, there is al -
Ways room for one more."
Instead we should explain that
the church which only admits
saints is like the doctor that
treats only healthy people. It
would be a nice job to have, but
she wouldn't be doing the job
she's supposed to do.
We are relucant tb admit we
- need help. Going back to Gene-
sis we can ask ourselves, "What
was the original sin in the Gar-
den?" Some would say "lust" or
`disobedience." Kushner won-
ders if the original sun was hu-
manity's arrogant claim of self-
sufficiency The idea we don't
need help - we can do it on our
own.
At some time during our life
journey everyone is vulerable -
and Jesus Christ recognized this.
He wanted to gather God's chil-
dren together "as a hen gathers
her brood under her wing," But,
Jesus recognized few of God's
children were willing at that
time to be gathered.
He left the Church to do this
work, Ideally the church is a
place were we come together
and admit the most important
things in life are things we can-
not get on our own. When the
church gathers to pray, our
prayer is not "God, I'm weak; do
this for me," but rather "God,
I'm only human, be with me as I -
. struggle to become a better one."

Granton correspondent enjoys outing
By Muriel Lewis
GRANTON - A recommended
and popular outing last week was a
visit to see the return of the Tundra
Swans to Aylmer from their winter-
ing grounds in the Chesapeake Bay
area of Maryland, as they begin
their annual spring migration north-
ward, across the continent, to
breeding grounds in the high Arctic
from Alaska to Baffin Island.
1f you go on a Tuesday, browsing
through the Aylmer Market can
make your day and while in the
arca, you might as well enjoy the
Maple Syrup experience at Lake
Whittaker, where the history of
making syrup can be traced from
the Indian, early and late pioneer
methods to modern methods.
The swans are on the move
through this area during the last
two weeks in March and some also
stop over at the Pinery near Grand
Bend.
Joe and Malene French, Jenine
