Irish eliminate Flyers, Hayter scores twice Meet Seaforth Centenalres In next playoff round By Fred Groves LUCAN - Tim Hayter scored two goals and Steve Matthews had three assists as the Lucan Irish beat Alvinston Flyers 6-2 to clinch the OHA De- velopment League west division quarter -final series. Lucan now advances to the semi-finals against the Seaforth Centenaires. Game One of that series goes Wednesday night in Lucan at 8:15 p.m. Seaforth put out the Pt. Stanley L.akers and Irish coach Ken Needham said the Centataires and the Flyers -have their simitatities. "They are a lot like these guys, clutch and grab," said Needham. Tim Hayter opened the scoring when he spun around and put it past Mike Pandur. The Flyers got right back in to it when Lucan goalie Bob Szabo wandered a little too far out of his net and Jeff Bloomfield scored. For a five minute span in the first period, and again in the second, the Irish totally domihated but failed to score. "The puck just didn't bounce our way," said Hayter. He returned to the team after Christmas due to conflicts with the team, but is now showing he belongs. Needham thought the Irish shauld have had more goals when they con- trolled the tempo. "We forced them and their goalie made some big saves." The visitors went ahead when Greg Casine connected but that would be thc last puck to go past Szabo, Jason Wilson put a nice move on Pandur 10 tie the score at the end of the first frame. Pandur who was injured a couple of times during the night, was given a 10 -minute misconduct when he shot the puck at Wilson after the goal. Defenceman Kevin Leitch got what proved to be the winner when he blasted a shot from the point for the only goal of the second period. Less than two minutes into the third period, Hayter made it 4-2. Ed Van- Kerkoerle hit the post but Darren Neil was there to put it in the net. Midway through the period, Chris Chater cushioned the Irish lead when he drilled one from the point which went into the top corner. • Irish 8, Flyers 3 Greg DePrest had two goals and a pair of assists Saturday afternoon to Exeter Hawk netminder Jason Bukela comes up with a big save during overtime last Tuesday night in Exeter while defensemen John Bell does his best to keep a Lambeth forward away from the rebound. Move on to play Mitchell Hawks eliminate Lancers in OT By Ray Lewis EXETER - Ray Cousineau's sec- ond goal of the game at 8:20 of overtime provided the difference last Tuesday as the Exeter Hawks defeated the Lambeth Lancers by a score of 8-7 in the fifth and decid- ing game of their best -of -seven OHA Development League west- ern division series. For much of the game the locals seemed sporadic at best as they trailed by scores of 5-2 and 7-5 be- fore finally waking up during the games latter stages. "They (Lambeth) arc always a strong club but we sure made it hard on ourselves," commented coach John Kernick after the game. "I'm just glad it's over." Trailing 5-2 midway through the second period, the Hawks stormed back with three straight goals to tic the game. But the Lancers struck for two goals in three minutes early in the third and it looked like the series would be shifting back to Lambeth for game six. With 2:43 remaining in regula- tion time, Cousineau fed a perfect pass to defenseman Nathan Blight at thc point who blew a shot past goalie Darryl Bond bringing the Hawks to within one. Exeter maintained some strong pressure and pulled netminder Ja- son Bukela in favour of the extra attacker. With 25 seconds left on the clock, the Hawks caught a break forcing a faceoff deep inside the Lancer zone. Centre Scott Schiedel won the draw cleanly back to de- fenseman Jeff Dalrymple, and his snapshot sent the home crowd into a frenzy as it found its way past a startled Bond. Both goaltenders then put on a show in the extra period, each snak- ing some sparkling saves. The bat. ole remained fairly even until Hawk defcnscman Steve Vandenberk aged to slip a pass to Cousineau, who banged it home for the game and series winner. "It felt good to see that one go in," said Cousineau later. "I saw the series stat sheet this morning and figured I'd better get moving." The 18 -year-old St. Marys prod- uct was voted an all-star at the end of the regular season, but had man- aged just four points of the first four games against Lambeth. Parents can teach their children to understand the value of compassion, respect and understanding of others. Or, they can sow the seeds of intolerance, bigotry and cruelty - the things that divide a society and keep us apart. Racism exists in many (orals and can be 'found everywhere in Canada. March 21 is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. And it is Canada's Anti -Racism Day, a time for us all to join the fight against inequality. Let's work together with our families and friends to break down the barriers that divide us. Let's set an example for our children and help create a world free of prejudice and discrimination.
