"1 had a lot of time to backhand it in and 1 think I caught him off guard." The veteran Brooks and Shields have been used a lot to kill penal ties and so has McArter and Fritz. That tatter duo from Brussells excelled in post -season .a year ago. Both have recently returned to the lineup and are providing a lot of of- fence for the Mohawks in their bid to defend their league title. Exeter had a 2-0 first period lead thanks to a pair of goals by McArt- er. The first coming shorthanded and the other on the powerplay. Fritz helped set up both. On the shorthanded tally, McArt- er took a long pass from Fritz, man- aged w control it and go in to beat Wilson. "I was looking behind for it. When you play with a guy for 18 or 20 years you know he's going to give it to you," said McArter. Exeter coach Dave Revington was pleased with McArter and Fritz and is confident they will do well the rest of the playoffs. "That's what is expected of those two," he said of their ability to score. "They've played together a long time. They just outwork every- one." Despite his lack of size, McArter proved he can give and take the rough stuff. In the third period, he was on a breakaway and was sent crashing into the end boards by Mudcat defenceman Rod Minor who was given a five-minute boarding penalty. After being treated on the ice for a cut to the, back of his head, McArter got back into the game and returned a check to Minor. The night before in Dunnville, McArter was handed a hooking penalty which allowed the Mudcats to score in double overtime. "It was bugging me. It upset me," said McArter. "It wasn't a dumb penalty. I had to come out and make up for it." Andre Prevost and Jeff McLena- ghan also scored in Sunday's game while Paul Tyne, Shaun Vaundry and Dale Kelly answered for the Mucats. Rick Pikul made several big saves for the Mohawks in net in- cludifig huge stops on Dave Kelly and Dave Roberts down the stretch. Mudcats 4, Mohawks 3 Saturday night in Dunnville, the Mudcats notched a pair of power- play goals including Kevin Smith's winner in the second overtime peri- od. Brooks and McArter both had shorthanded goals while Joe Scher- er got his 11th playoff goal. Sunday in Exeter, Scherer was given a penalty for using an illegal stick. Mohawks 6, Mudcats 4 Greg Snyder scored the winner with 6:15 left to go in Thursday's game and four minutes later set up Joe Scherer to clinch the victory. The pleasant surprise on the night for Exeter was Payne who scored the first goal of the game and set up two more. Also scoring for the visitors were Shields, Dale Gibbon and Brooks whose hard blast caught Wilson un- expectedly. Answering for Dunnville were Dale Kelly who had two goals and an assist, Dave Kelly and Kevin Smith. Although he allowed three first period goals, Pikul settled down and was hot in the final frame. DON'T LET GEORGE DO IT! Our friends to the South have derided that the Canadian - built Hondas don't qualify for the auto trade pact. Their decision may cost Onta- rio a vital piece of her indus- trial base, and several thou- sand jobs in Alliston. Maybe their position is sound; maybe it isn't. 1 just hope George isn't trying to get re-elected at our ex- pense. BAILEY'S OF HENSALL LTD.
