two assists en route to an 8-3 Exeter victory.
Irish lead series with Flyers
By Fred Groves
LUCAN - Jason Wilson scored a
pair of goals Sunday night as the
Lucan Irish made it two wins in a
row with a 5-3 win over the Alvins-
ton Flyers.
The Irish took a commanding
two -games -to -none lead in their
best -of -seven OHA Development
west division quarter -final series.
Game three was Iasi night in Al-
vinston and the fourth game is Fri-
day, again in Alvinston at 8:30 p.m.
Also scoring for the Irish on Sun-
day were Ed VanKerkoerle, Jon
McEachcrn and captain Andy Ross.
Irish 7, Flyers 6
Centre Dan Brand returned to the
lineup and made a big impact as he
scored two goals and set up the
winner by Steve Snider as the Irish
won the opener Wednesday night.
With 22 seconds left in the game,
Snider snapped a quick wrist shot
from 10 -feet out to beat Alvinston
goalie Mike Pandur.
Brand started the season with the
Junior 'B' Windsor Bulldogs but re-
turned in November. Work com-
mitments meant he didn't return to
the Irish until the playoffs.
"I don't think I got a fair shot at
it," said Brand of trying to crack
the Bulldogs' lineup. "They had
seven imports and they can only
dress six."
Irish coach Needham said Brand
will make a big difference in the
Irish attempt to defend the west di-
vision title. However, Brand, who
did not play hockey for a few
months is under Needham's watch-
ful eye.
"When he came back from Wind-
sor, he was working. We've told
him to make a committment or
leave his equipment and go."
Lucan got out to a quick start
Wednesday night, building a 2-0
lead after VanKerkorlc walked in
and scored and then Brand released
a fairly weak shot.
But the Flyers came back and
less than five minutes into the mid-
dle frame it was 2-2. Brand broke
the tic when he bounced are puck
off of Pandur. The goal was credit-
ed to Greg Muir.
"There was no other place to put
it," said Brand of the shot.
Alvinston tied it again but then
VanKerkoerle got his second. Jason
Wilson zigged-and-zagged around
the Alvinston defence and it was 5-

In the third, Szabo made a bad
mental mistake when he was
caught out of the net and a wrap
around goal made it 5-5. With Tim
Hayter in the penalty box for
roughing, Alvinston made it 6-5.
Jon McEachern deflected the
puck between Pandur's legs with
just 1:43 left before Snider got the
winner.
Throughout the game, Pandur, a
cut from the Irish training camp,
had his suck up high and caught
more than one Lucan forward un-
der the chin.
Needdham said his team could
not afford to retaliate.
"We can't afford to be shorthand-
ed. You have to hope the 'officiat-
ing takes care of it."
Lucan did not play well in the
first game of the best -of -seven se-
ries. Hayter missed several checks
in the first period, but did improve
and was authoritive in the next two.
There also seemed to be a lack of
communication between the for-
wards and the defence.
"Everybody was chasing the
wrong guy. It was probably the
worst game we've played," said
Needham.
Marty Swain led the Flyers' of-
fence with three goals and an assist.

Exeter takes 3-1 series lead
By Ray Lewis
LAMBETH - There's just some-
thing about playing in Lambeth
that seems to bring out the best in
the Exeter Hawks. Sunday night
the locals played the fownh game
of their best -of -seven OHA Devel-
opment league series in what has
become the very friendly confines
of the Lambeth arena, and dusted
the Lancers by a score of 9-5.
Lewis popped one in on the power-
play followed by Chipchase's first
of the evening.
WIIb John Bell in the penalty
box, Chipchasc picked up his sec-
ond when he tippod an errant
Lambeth pass at the Exeter Nue-
line. Chipchase raced in for a
breakaway, faked left and then
threw the puck high into the right
corner.
Junior 'D' roundup
In thgir two trips to Lambeth dur-
ing this series, the Hawks have
notched 17 goals. They hold a 3-1
series lead and may have eliminat-
ed the Lancers with a good show-
ing in Exeter last night. Results
were unavailable at press time.
"1 love playing in this building,"
said centre Shawn Chipchasc. "1
think the last regular season gamc 1
played here I got seven points."
By the end of the second period
in Sunday's game he seemed des-
tined to even that record, and by
evening's end he had struck for
four goals and one assist.
"I guess it was a good night,"
laughed Chipchase. "The puck just
kept coming to me and I was catch-
ing a few breaks."
Some say bad luck comes in
threes and for Lambeth it was
Chipchasc and linemates Shaync
Robinson and Derek Shackleton.
Robinson accounted for five points
on his own, setting Chipchase up
for three and banging in two him-
self.
Shackelton was credited with an
assist on Robinson's first goal just
thirty seconds into the game, but
was a force all night long freeing
the puck up for the line which has
become tops for the team. Over
three games they have struck for 13
of the squad's 24 goals.
"People were starting to wonder
about us with the way we finished
the season," said co -coach George
Pratt. "But I think those three guys
have proven they're here to play."
Quick lead
The Hawks struck early and built
a 4=0 lead which they maintained
, throughout the rest of the game. '
After Robinson scored, Larry
Chipchase then tallied a pair of
powerplay markers on identical
plays. After collecting the puck in-
side the Lancer btueline, Chipchase
couldn't find anyone open so he
calmly walked into the slot and
blew a slapshot paced goaltender
Darryl Bond.
Lambeth coach Randy McIntyre
replaced Bond with Doug Rollins
and Chipchasc promptly initiated
the goalie by burning him with the
same move.
Rounding out the scoring for the
locals were Ray Cousineau, Scott
Schiedel and Robinson.
"1 thought it was going to be a lot
tougher than it was," said coach
John Kenrick of the contest. "1
thought we were going to be hurt
on defense but the boys really
played well."
The Hawks were without the ser-
vices of defensemen Allan Blom-
maert and Jeff Dalrymple. Lewis
went out in the first period when he
re-injured his knee and Jamie Cor-
nish had the flu. Nathan Blight had
a great game in picking up the
slack.
Exeter 5, Lambeth 4
The Hawks held off a determined
Lancer team before a good crowd
in Exeter Friday night, squeaking
out a 5-4 victory.
Doug Clark opened the scoring
six minutes in and netted the win-
ner with six minutes left in the sec-
ond game of the series.
Also scoring were Paul Manders,
Schiedel and Chipchase. Jason Bu-
kela was steady in goal turning
aside 31 shots.
Exeter 8, Lambeth 3
In Lambeth Wednesday, goal-
RINGETTE
lender Clint McGann settled down
after a 'shaky sten to give die
Hawks the Solid goaltending they
needed.
Despite outshooting the Lancers
20-6 in the first period Exeter
trailed the game 2-1. But hard
worst finally paid off in the second
when the Hawks began to pounce
on some loose pucks.
Shackleton and Robinson each
had a pair and singles went to
Manders, Clark, Schiedel and Dan
Ryan.
Depending on the outcome of last
night (Tuesday's) game, the locals
will either play in Lambeth Sunday
night or await their next opponent,
most likely the Mitchell Hawks.
