Ten years ago, the Hensall and District Horticultural Society was formed with the simple goal of helping to make the village an at- tractive place to visit or live. Since that time countless projects have been undertaken, and a common bond strengthened within the com- munity. During 1982, various members of the village came together with the notion of forming a group dedi- cated to horticulture for 1983, the year of Hensall's centennial. The idea was to have the village look- ing nice for the event. On Febru- ary 18, 1983 it was moved by Ei- leen Rannie that a horticultural society be formed. In order to qualify for govern- ment assistance at that time, it was necessary for the club to have a membership of 100. For the found- ers, it meant a lot of phone calls and a huge membership drive. "!t was a lot' of running around," recalled Eileen Rannie, one of the society's founding members. "We had to have 100 members just to start." Nowadays, specifications are a little more lenient, but despite this the society still boasts a fellowship of 94. The new membership dnve is being launched this month and anyone interested in horticulture is welcome. The membership fee is a mere two dollars which is actually re- turned to the applicant in the form of a free box of plants. Pansies have been chosen, adopted as the village flower. The society -adopts various pro- jects throughout the year, including the care of 16 flower beds within the village. Educational bus trips are organized to various botanical gardens, trees are planted and films presented to provide more insight into the field of horticulture. Membership buys the avid honi- culturalist attendance at five educa- tional/social events, the privilege to exhibit at the annual local flower show, a copy of the society's year- book, periodic newsletters, a chance to join the bus tours as well as entertainment, fun and fellow- ship. In honour of their tenth anniver- sary, the Hensall and District Horti- cultural Society is already busy making plans for the upcoming year to be a banner one. GRAND BEND - Bungee Jump- ing in Grand Bend? It could happen this summer. The village's recreation commit- tee has brought forth a proposal to set up the dare devil event. Council decided Monday night to sendttheproposal back to the Com- mittee in an attempt to change the location. The two individuals who are planning the permanent summer ac- tivity, David Brounstein and Dan McCoy, wanted it to be near the beach but council said this was not a favourable idea. "It's an event that draws interest wherever it goes," said councillor Ed Fluter. 'It was 'one of the most Ovular events at the CNE." He said although the crane which would hoist participants up into the air is not that noisy, screams and yells are. Monday night at the Grand Bend council meeting, it was discussed whether or not to change that time to midnight. Councillor Ed Fluter said the parking and law enforcement com- mittee which brought the recom- mendation to council, did not want to scare off any local people from using the beach for strolling or swimming. Fluter had- reservations about having bungee jumping as a perma- nent attraction to the village. "I think if something came in on a special events basis, people could tolerate it," said Fluter. 1 BEST RATES on your G.I.C.
