When outdoor rinks were king
days.
Outdoor rinks were constructed at Kirkton, Winchelsea (beside 4,
creamery), and Thames Road. A good source of water was necessary
keep the rinks flooded. Another problem► was snow removal after snow
fall, although the banks heaped up did make for good viewing plates fo
fans. The original boarded rink at ThamesRoad was moved to a new lo
cation beside the church shed and became alighted ice surface, MI'
must have greatly extended the hours of use. Everyone shared ice clean-
ing, and volunteers in Kirkton spent countless hours caring for the ice.
'... It was a big improvement when the ice surface moved indoors,
church sheds, in the fifties. Ross Marshall suggests that the
church sheds came to be used for ice was because they were no longe
required to house the horses since by then, people had cars and -
roads were kept plowed out. Now, snow removal was no longer
problem that it had been with outdoor rinks. Church sheds at Kirkton
Woodham, and Elimville were all used for ice. Kirkton is the only
still flooded and then enough cold weather to make all the work worth
while. Artificial ice in arenas may e expensive but it is always there.
