Well, it's taken four
years, but here it is back
again. Happy birthday to
all of you who were born
on February 29. It must be
difficult to understand
when you are young only
being able to actually cele-
brate your birthday on your
birthday every fourth year,
however at my age I think it would be just WONDERFUL! I
remember a lady living down the street from us as I was grow-
ing up, her birthday was on February 29 and although I knew
she looked as old as my grandmother, she would only admit to
being a quarter of her age. She said if she was going to be
cheated out of her birthdays, she was going to cheat on the
years.
Because the calendar year is only 365 days and the solar year
(the length of time it takes for the earth to, mala a complete
circuit around the sun) is 365 days five hours and 48 minutes,
we have to add an extra day eyery, four/years to make up the
difference between the calend4r and solar years. Because, if
this was done every four years, the average calendar year
would be 11 minutes, 14 seconds too long. The extra day is not
added to centuries unless they are divisible by 400.
Thankfully Pope Gregory got this all figured out in 1582.
Back then he only had to decree that there would bc ten days
dropped from October that year to bring everything back to
rights with the equinox. I would hate to thin): how many con-
ferences, committees and sub-conimittees would have to sit,
how many white papers, green papers and save ' the trees pa-
pers would have to be written and how many referenda would
have to be put before the people if we had to do our catching
up now!
1 wont if they are called leap years -because the days of the
week, rather than moving along by just one day, after March 1,
leap ahead two days. So that since April 1, 1991, was a Mon-
day, this year, instead of being a Tuesday, it becomes a
Wednesday.
It's hard to find a lead in from leap year to a recipe. I thought
of frogs legs as a leaping subject, but since I have neither
cooked nor eaten those, I didn't feel I could use them and since
my older daughter fell into a noisy fit, when I even mentioned
them, let s go from leap year to frogs legs to chicken legs or
any sort of chicken pieces you like.
Curried Chicken
Grease the bottom of a 9x13 pan. Layer the bottom of the
pan with raw fresh vegetables. We like broccoli and carrots,
but squash might be nice too. Don't expect crisp vegetables
when they are cooked like this but they taste delicious. Place
skinned chicken on top of this.
Mix:
2 cans Cream of Chicken soup
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 tsp. curry powder (or to taste)
Pour this over the chicken and vegetables. Top with shred-
ded old cheese and bread crumbs if desired. Cover (1 forgot to
tell someone this and things didn't tum out very well) and cook
for 1-2 hours at 375° (or until chicken is done). You can take
the lid off for the last little while to brown things up a bit.
Serve with rice and chutney.
