New Massey Ferguson tractors will have a 15 pe►eent more

Technological
improvements in
equipment offer farmer
edge in efficiency
Technological improvements in farm equipment in recent years
have nearly all been aimed at improving the efficiency of the ma-
chinery in an effor• •o give the producer in today's tight market a Tit-
tle more edge In I ging costs down.
Bob Ulch at Husseldale Farm Equipment otters the White planter
as one piece of equipment that has undergone such updates in re-
cent years. It still remains recognized as "probably one of the most
accurate planters on the market today"; mainly due to its short seed
drop, which keeps the variance in seed spacing to a minimum.
Ulch says a common rule claims that a planter just five percent
more accurate than the one it replaces will soon pay for itself in in-
k reased yield and reduced waste on the average farm.
The White planter can also be easily converted for use in a no -till
system for those farmers seeking a reduction in soil erosion and the
savings of fewer passes over the field.
A newer feature on the -planter is the fact that a second row of
planters can be easily added behind the first so that the furrow
spacing can be halved to 15 inches for those farmers who prefer a
tight leaf canopy on their soybeans to retain soil moisture.
Ulch says the White planter still has its depth control gauged in 1/
8 inch increments and the separate gauge wheels can track the
ground without letting the odd rock throw the planting disc out of the
optimum depth for moisture. 4^{^^o
Optional fertilizer discs can be added 10 the planter -to add
dry or liquid nutrients 10 the soil.at the same time as the seed, which
can remove another pass over the field for the farmer.
White also has its model 230 field cuttivator bunt on a 4x4 inch
steel frame. Not only is it stronger and heavier, but it allows more
distance between tines for more ground clearance. Both C -shank
and S -tines can be fitted. The C -shank is more popular in this area,
but the S -tine has no moving parts.
"It depends what the guys using it for," said Ulch, adding different
tines work best in different seasons.
Russeldale Farm Equipment stocks a line of Massey Ferguson
combines and tractors, which is still the largest manufacturer of
tractors in the western world. New this year on 95-140 horsepower
models is the Quadram diesel engine, which claims to be up to 15
percent more efficient than conventional designs.
As Ulch explains it, the Quadram times detonation more closely to
the top centre of piston travel, reducing backpressure from early
detonation. A specially -cut piston crown not only achieves this
breakthrough in efficiency, but also reduces exhaust emissions
through'cleaner burning.
"Everybody's environmentally conscious these days too," said
Ulch.
The Quadram engine even has a cast -in gear driven water pump
to reduce drag and improve reliability. The whole design is not in-
tended to improve power, but to deliver it more efficiently and save
the farmer money.
Russeldale Farm Equipment provides full servicing of White, Mas-
sey and all other brands of farm implements, and is also expanding
its preventive service program - farmers can have their equipment
inspected and overhauled in the off-season to prevent frustrations
in the field.
"That's the idea..to try and get the equipment ready for spring,"
said Ulch.
As equipment becomes more and more high-tech and more elec-
tronicslind ,their way into tractors and combines, Ulch says many
farmers are finding its pays to rely on dealer servicing.
"It's very delicate high-technology equipment and a little short in
the wrong place can cost a lot 01 money," he said.
With low commodity prices, farming has become a game in which
only those with the highest efficiency and lowest costs survive. In-
novations in equipment to meet those aims can't be ignored.
"I think everybody's buying something that will save them time
and increase their ability to grow a good crop," said Ulch.
For smaller operations and those just starling out small, Russel -
dale Farm Equipment also has a good selection of used implements
and machinery.
"For smaller operations or whatever, it's still a lower cost way of
getting the job done," said Ulch.
