Srnu'scuIpture competition is
still Grand Bend's main event

GRAND REND - The main event al Grand Bend
Winter Carnival is still the Snow Sculpture competi-
tion. The major obstacle was Saturday's allay rain,
which severely dantaged some of the sculptures, par-
ucularly those finished too early, or those with thin
shells of snow and tine detail. Several teams covered
their sculptures with plastic, unfinished and completed
them earl Sunday when temperatures dropped slight-
ly. `These -fared much better for judging, which was
done earlier on Sunday than originally scheduled.
The USA team #5 of Marilyn Kampen, Art Willie
and Paul Hess won the 51000 fast prize and trophy
for a team of dramatically stylized draft horses, a very
handsome sculpture. The -#6 team of Canada - Ted
Hayes, Tyler Hayes and Don Ewald, took second
prize, S500 and trophy, for a marvelously detailed
mythic Gryphon perched on an open book. The third
prize "People's Choice" award went to local Grand
Bend champion team of Cam Heist, John Maychos and
Nick Whalen for their whimsical rendition of a huge
laughing seal splashing in a giant bathtub.
The team from England sculpted an enormous, loom-
ing skull, while last year's champion team with Vicki
Rogers won HQn_oureble mention wlth_$'massive Inuit
hunter carrying a seal. Chuck Culp's Canadian team
created an engaging dragon/dinosaur holding a Blue
Box titled "Please feed the Recyclosaurus". Another
sculpture was a chilling rendition of a skeleton peering
out of a dying planet Earth.
Grand Bend is busy sp
duringtheir annual carnival
By Roberta Walker
GRAND BEND - There are over
30 events during Winter Carnival,
all around the town of Grand Bend.
The Children'g Party on Saturday
night at the Public School attracted
over 100 children. The kids were
treated to entertainment with India-
na Bob, the Juggler, Tom Baxter,
the magician, and clown Bernard
Arenc. There were also movies,
games and pop from Pepsi Co. and
pizza from Pizza Delight, for a
great evening out for the kids too.
More than 60 children came out
to skate on the old river bed on
lsake Road. The ice was a bit soft,
but safe and fun to skate on. Kids
and parent~ warmed up with free
hot dogs and drinks from Pepsi and
the Carnival commiuce, served by
Grand Bend Firemen. Hay rides
took visitors on a tour r f the whole
town, picking up and d upping off
passengers at events like a bus ser-
vice.
Grand Bend Firemen were very
busy on Sunday, beginning the day
with a pancake and sausage break-
fast. Several hundred early birds
took advantage of the offer to start
the day with a good breakfast, and
crowded the fire hall.
The Rotary Club sponsored a
Children's Village of Snow, and if
you couldn't find your child, that's
probably where they all were. A
huge snow mountain slide was the
great favorite, both for climbing
and ding. There was a snow
niaze to explore and pony rides pro-
vided free by Whipple Tree Riding
Stables.
There was an entertainment stage
hosted by CFPL-TV with sched-
uled performances by Bumbo the
Clown, magician Tom Baxter, mu-
sician Denis Siren and Juggler Indi-
ana Bob. Some of these talented
performers were also seen at the

Legion Hall and various other.spots
around town. Teens from Youth In-
volvement Ontario were on hand w
help with any small or handicapped
children who needed, assistance to
.enjoy the playground fun.
The most hilarious competition
was held downtown, the CFPL-TV
Waiter's Race. This "Winter Waiter
Challenge" presents an obstacle
course to teams of four from vari-
ous bar/restaurant establishments.
as they carry trays of bottles and
glasses over the obstacles. This
event is a real crowd pleaser, orga-
nized by Finnegan's Irish • House
Susan Roche. The winner was a
team from "Ceeps", a UWO bar in
London. Second* place went to
Commercial Bar of Seaforth. Last
place went' to the Albion Hotel of
Bazfteld, where their customers arc
obviously more dignified and have
less need of speed.
Mixed snow
bird golf held
at Oakwood
Course
By Roberta Walker
GRAND BEND - Oakwood Goll
Course was back in play for the lase
two weekends as they hosted a 4
day mixed snow bird golf tourna-
ment. Forty-eight golfers signed up
for Scotch Two Ball, a nine hole
game played with tennis balls. Rod
Mohr and Wendy Sherk won the
first weekend, with a low score of
61, played in freezing, snowy
weather. This weekend was cold
and wet, something golf fanatics
are more accustomed to, so Chuck
Zehr and Shirley Gallant scored 51
to win. The. top team on Sunday
was Ron and Barb Tagell , with a
score of 49 - fantastic! Oakwood
Golf pro Gil Parkinson ran the tour-
nament and awarded prizes to all
the winners.
