Without it what a dull old world we would live in. Walklgg down Main -Street and looking -in all of the shop windows gives you some idea of what I am talking about. The dif- ferent styles and colours of clothes and shoes is amazing. Watching people walk down the street is also a lesson in choice and personal taste in wearing apparel and hair styles. The restaurants also try to cater to dif- ferent taws and nis, fromsiuick meals to full relaxed din- ing. Walking the aisles of our grocery stores can't help but show how our tastes differ. More and more fresh produce.in more and more varieties is appearing. Jars of pickles and jams, tins of vegetables and fruit, packets of rice and pasta dishes are all arrayed to .catchour imaginations and tempt our palates. Last week I found an old copy of Good Hqusekeeping and in it there was a recipe for "the world's best brownies". I always thought that I already had that recipe. My family always fin- ished up the ones I made in short order! Well, there was only one thing to do - The Great Brownie Bake Off. I made up both recipes, being especially careful that I used the same measuring cups and ingredients. The only thing that I changed was that 1 didn't add any nuts to either recipe because two of my children don't like them that way. We made a deci- sion here at home and then 1 struck out with the rest of the brownies and had a blind taste test at the TA. I have been vin- dicated! My brownies did come out on top, but it was a close race. Obviously personal taste is so important and in the case of my family maybe just familiarity. However, here are the two recipes if you want to try them. Brownies Melt in a double boiler (I use the microwave) and cool: 12 cup butter 4 oz. chocolate (4 unsweetened squares) Beat: 4 (at room temperature) eggs 1/2 tsp. salt Add gradually and continue to beat: 2 cups sugar 1 tsp. vanilla Combine by hand the chocolate mixture and the eggs and be- fore they are completely blended add: 1 cup sifted flour Stir in gently 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts Bake at 3500 in 9x13 greased and floured pan, about 25 min- utes. Good Housekeeping Fudge Brownies Melt over low heat, stirring frequently: 1 cup margarine or butter 6 1 -ounce squares unsweetened ch000late Remove from heat and with wooden spoon beat in until well blended: 2 cups sugar 4 eggs Stir in: 1 cup flour 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 tsp. salt 2 cups chopped walnuts Spread batter evenly in a 9x9, greased pan and bake 45-50 minutes at 350°. Lighten Up Canada is a yearly event quickly sweeping the nation. February 6 was proclaimed Lighten Up Day, and its sole purpose is to make people happy. The trend ac- tually began in England about five years ago, and has since been adopted by several small towns across Ontario such as Acton. "It's really just a Away to get rid of the winter blahs," said Julie God- win, who is trying to establish the same sort of idea in Exeter. "1 saw a segment on television about Ac- ton and figured, now why couldn't we cheer up some people right here is Exeter?" According to Godwin, other par- ticipating regions have a lot of fun with the silly festivities and every- one participates. For next year she is hoping to get local merchants in- volved to help boost morale. ' The concept is relatively simple and bears little expense. Partici- pants simply don red, foam noses and continue along their daily rou- tines hoping to bring onlookers a smite. "Given today's economy, every- one could use a little cheering up," agreed Bonny Brown, one of this year's participants. "Everyone who saw us with these funny looking noses got a good chuckle, and that's what it is all about." So go ahead Exeter. Lighten up.
