Matthews scores four In 7-2 win
By Aid &MU
4-UCAN - There este tidy two
Slings you have so brow to win
hockey games: put the puck in the
other team's net, cad teep it out of
yours.
'Wednesday right the Lucan Irish
did both very well as they routed
the visiting Lambeth Lamers 7-2 in
OHA Development League hockey
action.
Second -year rightwigger Stove
Mauhew, scored four goals and
Bob Szabt, allowed just a pair of
first penod goals before shutting
the Lancers down for two solid pe-
riods.
A year ago, Matthews did not sec
a lot of ice time. But Wednesday he
netted his 16th goal of the season.
"I've got more confidence," -said a
pleased Matthews.
Alter the Lancers took a 2-0 first
penod lead, Matthews teamed with
linemates Jon McEachern and Ja-
son Wilson to tie the score.
"On the first -couple of goals,
McEachern and =Wilson werework-
ing in the comers. There's size and
quickness," he said of his mates.
Wilson also had a four point
night as he scored onee and set up
three more. McEachem, the centre
on the line, had three assists. Also
scoring for Lucan were Jeremy Je-
mec and Keith Robson with his
fust of the season.
Lucan coach Ken Needham said
all of his forwards are capable of
scoring the big goals but noted that
Wilson and Matthews were due to
break out of what he called a
malni.ng in the penod.
Early in the third and again on
the powerplay,. Ray Cousineau
banged in a pass from Ryan for his
team -leading 28th goal of the sea-
son. The goal restored Exeter's •
three -goal lead and the Hawks
managed two more in the victory.
Also notching goals for the locals
was Vandenberk, Paul Manders
and Ryan.
Exeter 9, Seaforth 5
A four -point night from veteran
Schiedel helped the Hawks to a 9-5
victory over the Centennaires in
Exeter Friday night, in what turned
out to be a very physical contest.
Referee. -Dave Whaley handed out
over 130•arinutes • in penalties dur-
ing .the contest which eventually
saw three players ejected and sever-
al members of the Centennaires
leave the game injured.

slump.
"We expected a lot out of him
(Matthews), he's capable of doing
well," said Needham.
After Matthews got his first on
the night. Needham left the line on
the ice and they quickly responded
with another. The geology paid off
again in the third with back-to-back
goals, one by Matthews and the
other from Wilson.
"YeuWe -got--the-adrenalin -going
after you score, you might as well
stay out there," said Matthews.
Needham said it was just the cer-
tain situation at the time which
prompted him to leave McEachem,
Wilson and Matthews on the ick.
"The first time it was early in the
shift. It depends on how long
they've been out there."
Score quickly: Lambeth, in a
fight for third spot in the west divi-
sion with the Exeter Hawks, got
two quick goals to star the game.
Defenceman Scott Forester con-
nected and it was 2-0 when Lucan's
Andy Ross was sent (therpenahy
box for hitting behind and Lancers'
Tom Walker responded with a
powerplay goal.
"We never come out flying and
I've never been able to figure that
out," said Needham of his team's
slow start. He also said he hoped
his team hati shaken the January
blahs. -
Needhani had a lot of p.aise for
Szabo who appears to be Lucan's
bread-and-butter if they want to
beat out the Mitchell Hawks for
first place.
Szabo was not spectacular on
Wednesday but he did play the an-
gles perfect and' was not timid in
coming out of his net and playing:
the puck.
Lucan made it five wins in a row
on Saturday when they travelled to
Mt. Brydgtes and returned with a 4-
3 win. Paul Woodburn led the +ef-
fbtce with a pair with singles to
Wilson and Matthews.

EXETER - With only five games
remaining in their OHA Develop-
ment league regular season, the Ex-
eter Hawks are in high gear.
A win over ML Brydges at home
last Tuesday, followed by back-to-
back victories in Exeter against the
Seaforth Centennaires Friday and
Saturday, have the locals firmly set
in third spot in the western divi-
sion.
"Things are starting to come to-
gether at just the right time," said
coach John Kernick. "We're get-
ting some confidence at home and
you can see the guys -have a little
differs attitude...
Coupe that with a long home
stand and you've got a team that
has gone 7-2-1 in their last ten
. games, and are unbeaten since the
all-star break with a perfect 4-0
record.
"We hadu:t been playing very
well at home all season," admitted
Kernick. "We needed to build
some confidence before the
playoffs :so " home ; ice .advantage
will mean something."
Recently acquired centre John
O'Hara and goaltender Jason Buke-
la both proved to be factors during
last Tuesday's win, as did the re -
tum of veteran winger Jim Dickins.
Dickins, at 6'1" and 185 lbs. was
a scoring threat all night long and
showed he hasn't lost his touch by
denting the twine midway through
the first period He feels the pros-
pects for this year's squad are good
and is jusrhoping to contribute.
"I've been playing some hockey
all year long so' I'm not too ,out of
shape," said Dickins. "I was sur-
prised to get a regular shift but it
felt really good to get back out
there."
Exeter still has one players card
left, but according to both Kernick
and Hawks president Al Quinn,
they may not excercise it.
"We think we're pretty solid for
the playoffs," said Quinn. "So we
may not bother using it at all....
Exeter 7, Seaforth 4
In a rematch of -Friday -night's
game the Hawks p&werplay proved
the difference as they skated to a 7-
4 win. Exeter took advantage of
three consecutive powerplay oppor-
tunities which proved to be the dif-
ference in the game.
Trailing 1-0 early in the first peri-
od, Doug Clark opened the scoring
for Exeter as he tucked home a pass
from Dan Ryan after Scott Schiedel
dug the puck loose.
The teams then traded goals in
the second just 35 seconds apart be-
fore Shayne Robinson scored the
Hawks' first powerplay tally at
16:12. With Seaforth's Jeff Pogson
off for hooking, Clark stole the
puck inside the Centennaire blue -
line and centred to Robinson who
deked out goaltender Jason Pethick
before throwing the puck into the
net.
Three -minutes later, Exeter took
the titan advantage again when
Pogson returned to the penalty box
for cross-checking. Schiedel man-
aged to tip home a shot from the
point by defenseman Steve Van-
denberk with only 39 seconds re -
Exeter Hawk framed Shame Robinson had Seaforth goaltender Dana Duskocy rght where he
wanted Friday night. Robinson took a breakaway pass from Andrew Barton and converted it
into a second period goal as the Hawks went on to rout the Centennaires 9-5 in Exeter.
