Police chase Ieads EXETER - A _ po!lce chase through Usbome Township on November•27 has lead to the convic- lion of a Kirkton area man, Frederick J. Steele of Kirkton was found•guilty'of dwiagerous driving last Tuesday in Exeter Court. A police officer told the court that -while operat- ing radar on County Road 6 he observed and re- corded a vehicle travelling at 1201cnyh. The'bfficer activated the cruiser's lights and ;Siren but the vehi- cle failed to stop. A chase ensued in which the vehicle of the ac- cused went through several stotiand yield signs i it finally swung around to a stop, apparently having struck a tree. I lone occupant then -fled the scene. -The officer did norpursue the ' 'ver on foot, but instead seized the vehicle. Jddge R.G.E. Hance+eerttenced theaocused,to a fine of $750 or 35 days in jail with six months to pay and also gave Steele an automatic one year driving suspension. Theft under $1;009 - Gerald L. Ellis of Bayfield pleaded guilty to a charge of theft under $1,000. Police told the court on on December7, 1991, the accused was seen putting a replacement cartridge under his jacket in Canadian Tire in to court conviction Exeter. Ellis paid for some oil and had over $900 in his wallet at the time, but.adnitted'to stealing the cartridge. Ellis was fined $250 with 14 days to pay or five days in jail. Snowmobile theft Charles Windsor. of Huron Park entered a guilty plea to stealing a 1982 Yamaha snowmobile valued at less than $1,000. The court heard that on December 7, the accused saw a broken-down snowmobile in a ditch in Stephen Township while driving by. The owner had left the vehicle to go for help. Windor loaded the snowmobile into his truck, and stored it in a shed at his brother's residence. On December 18, OPP found the snowmobile in the shed. Windsor was fined $250 with 30 days to payor five days in jail. Failure to comply, with probation Douglas J. Regier was sentenced to 45• days in jail, following a guilty plea to a charge of failing to comply wjth a pnnhatign order. The cant heard Regier had been charged on September 30, 1991, and was sentenced to perform 75 hours of community service work within nine months. Employment was set up at the Sopth Hurod Recreation Centre, but the accused informed the court that on the two occasions he had shown up, the person to whom he was to report was not there. He said Ridgetown has a contract with the local OPP detachment to provide five officers and 22 hours of patrolling a .day at a frost of some S295,000 a year. "It shows there is another way of policing in this town," said Mickle, r who added that Ridgetown has still to install a Police Services Board and have not yet been pressed into it by the province, as Exeter was last week.
