Computer program offering farmers new ways to chart fertility A new program at Cook's is giving local farmers a powerful new toorIn the battle to keep fleldsprontable. By joining soil testing with a computer progrlam, a precise ash - mate of what fertilizers and herbicides will be needed to prvdttoe•a l'iven yield in a given field. The program even takes into account ivinucht Meld:characteristics such as drainage problems, soli compaotbn, or .John Beardsley -at Cook's Centralia office describes the fertility program as offering two distinct advantages for producers. thy, It makes sure. only the fertilizers required for. nutrient supplemertta- bon are spread.on a .field, reducing unwanted environmental side- eftects. Itis e'and'moie necessary to know what you're putting on ma ty,"-seri d-t3eardafey, but added that the frig advantage is eco- nomic. "You have to make sure every dollar you spend makes you two or three dollars," he said, explaining that the program can compare soil nutrients, cost of fertilization and herbicides, expected yields, other production costs, and crop prices In other words, a farmer can get a detailed printout of what direct benefits to expect from more or Tess fertilization, or can compare the profitability of eightditterent crops in the samefield. Beardsley describes the cost of soil testing 20 -acre tots as °mod- erate" and worthwhile when considering the wealth of tntormatbn the computer system can offer the tarmer. This part of Cook's regu- lar customer service. The samples, which are:tested in Guelph, only have to be taken every three years or so and are stored on the computer system to chart the fields overall fertility over the years. Beardsley says the computer fifes can prove invaluable to a landlord who rents to a new tenant unaware of the fields history. Several local farmers have already started using the program on at Least one of their fields and are comparing their 1991 season's results against the computer predictions. The results so far are r► very, promising, even though the computer can't make predictions about the weather. The computer can also make selecting tram among the dozens of herbicides easier. By inputting needs and application methods, the system can track the expected results -from each of the various choices. When corn was $4 a bushel, says Beardsley, a tamier could be assured of staying in the black with traditional production methods. Today, with prices much ower, the computer is quickly becoming an invaluable tool to show exactly what is required to stay out of the red. He expects many will come .to appreciate the benefit of being able to plug in all the variables -of fertility, herbicides and other pro- duction costs, compared to expected crop prices well in advance of .growing:season.io be -able to accurately predict and track a farm's performance on a field-by-tieldbasis: Air6iWlltlrollRy, Cook's, Growingto meet your needs.
