Dictionary of Word and
Phrase Origins by Martin
Mrnser. It is a marvellous
collection, and lots of fun to read. One of the phrases he has
included is the "baker's dozen". This phrase developed in 15th
_asoturylingland,bucausebakur&harilbeauplitallon-ofsalliog
underweight bread. To saunter this, the bakers took to baking
13 loaves instead of twelve in order to satisfy the weight re-
.
The following recipe does not make a baker's dozen loaves,
just one or two very satisfying ones.
Casrno1e Bread
2 c, wann-(n Trot) water
2 pkg. yeast (or two tbsp.)
2 tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. butter or margarine
5 c. all purpose flour
Put warm water in large bowl with 1 tbsp. sugar. Sprinkle
yeast over top and let rest 5 minutes. Stir.
Add the rest of the sugar, salt, butter and 3 -cups of flour.
Beat with an electric mixer at low speed until blended and at
medium speed for 2 minutes. (I only have a small hand mixer,
sot use it at high.) .
Beat in the rest of the flour with a wooden spoon. ('Ibis is
hard, and by the end I have usually discarded the spoon and
am using my hand!)
Cover the bowl with, waxed paper and let rise in a warm spot
until double, 35-40 minutes.
Stir down the batter and beat vigorously for 2 minutes. (This
is a major test of the -biceps!)
/Pour into a greact 2 quart casserole (I use my angelfoctd
cake pan for mine), cover and let rise again 25-30 minutes.
Bake 60-65 minutes at 375°, and tum out on a wire rack to
cool.

SHOULD I MAKE MY FUNER.-.L .- 2ClSIONS ALONE?
Occasionally we hear about people who have considered arranging in '
advance for their funeral services but did not because they didn't know
how to broach the subject to their spouses. Ors difficult to talk about
death, they say.
Well, sometimes it is. but we, as funeral directors, believe that open-
ness is still the best policy. You need feel no embarrassment in tacking
with your husband it wife aboiit final arrangements. Chances are that
he or she will also have thought of it.
And talking over with us your plans for services will make sure every-
one -- you, your spouse, your clergyman, and ourselves -- understand
exactly your wishes. That's important to you and to us.
Please call us or stop by if you would like more information on Pre -
Planning. Your comments and questions are invited.
