How To START i Frau.---Many per- sons have often noticed the extreme difficulty encountered in lighting a fire in a stove, especially on a still, damp morning. The stove won't draw; even vigorous blowing " will not suffice ; and then, when it does start, it is with a sort of explosion or outward rush of air which fills the room with smoke and. gas, oftentimes puffing the unpleasant fumes in the face of the operator. The trouble is caused by the difficulty en- countered in overcoming the inertia of the long column of air in the chim- ney or pipe by the small column of air that can be fel:cad up through the in- terstices of wood and coal, at the bot- tom of which the fire is kindled. Alt this may be remedied by simply putting a few shavings or bits of paper on the top of the wood or coal, and first light- ing that; it immediately bursts into a blaze, because the air has perfectly free access- to it from' all sides, the heated air forces its way into the chimney, and establishes there an upward current. The matcli can then be applied to the .kindling' under the fuel, which will lodge, under the auspices of the I.O.G.T. lodge No. 180 was held in the adtioult- oral hall here, on Thursday evening last. Cassidy to the audience, who chose as the subject of his address, "Woman's Influence," which he hand- led in a very creditable manner, enforc- ing his arguments by numerous anec- dotes and quotations from scripture. The next speaker was Rev. 111r. Hay - lock, of Woodham. He selected the question of the Prohibitory Liquor Law. He endeavered tO show that a prohibi- tory law wass essentially necessary in our country, and in the event of the Dominion Parliament granting such a law, that it ecnild be successfully and beneficially utilized. Miss Shillington presided at the instrument, and'Mr. H. November is generally regarded as the gloomiest month in the year, and it is perhaps true, that less enjoyment is derivable itt it from external objects than in any other of the twelve divisions of the calendar. It is popularly regard- ed as the month of blue -devils and suia sides. Leaden skies, -torrents of rain, and occasional fltuTies of sloppy snow combined frequently with heavy gusts of wind, which shake down the last re- maining leaves from the trees, are phe- nomena of normal occurence in Novem- ber, and certainly by no means condo - dye to baoyancy and cheerfulness of spirits. Summer and itutumn, with their exhilirating influendes, have fairly departed, and winter in its gloomiest phases, is approaching while the hila- rity and joyousness of Christmas is still fax off.
