Dashwood Industries -cuts
wages to weather recession
CENTRALIA - In an effort to
keep costs down while Dashwood
Industries weathers a slump in
sales, salaried staff at the Centralia
window and door manufacturer
were issued a five percent cut in
pay effectiveJanuary1.
Plant manager Tom Duffy con-
firmed that the cuts were "across
the board" and also meant there
would be no ' wage increases for
1992.
Duffy said that with overall sales
down, the company is making an
effort to keep costs down - meas-
ures which also affect the other op-
erations of TJ International, the
-Atnetican parent company.
The cutbacks do not affect the
hourly staff who are under contract
with the Carpenters and Joiners Un-
ion.
Board of Ed looks to tighten belt
CLINTON - The HuroyCounty
Board of Education held their first
regular board 'meeting Monday in
Clinton, presenting some of their
objectives for 1992. .
Bea Dawson delivered the chair's
inaugural address outlining the dif-
ficult economic°times which lay in
store not only for the Board, but for
the entire county.
"As 1 look to the future," read
Dawson from her prepared address,
"I can foresee a difficult and enor-
mous task in the year ahead for the
Huron County Board of Education,
as we endeavor to maintain and
keep the program and facilities of
past Boards in these recessionary
times."
Huron is one of the leading
Boards in the province at develop-
ing to community needs. Currently
in place is a full drug education
program, as well as non -regular
programs such as Co-operative Ed-
ucation, START, WOW, Adult Ed-
ucation. Alternative Education,
Adult Re -Entry and Job Shadow-
ing.
Unfortunately, already in the
forecast for the Board this year is a
12 percent hydro•inctease in addi-
tion to hikes in bus repair and fuel
expenses, the Canada Pension Plan,
Unemployment Insurance and
Workers' Compensation. Add to
that renegotiations of six current
contracts beginning in May, and the
announcement from Provincial
Treasurer Floyd Laughren that
there will be no major increases in
grants for education.
Overcrowding in schools is also
becoming a problem. Schools now

in Exeter -court

EXETER - A charge of driving while under
suspension has netted a Southampton man a
$1003.75 fine following his conviction in Justice
of the Peace court in Exeter last Tuesday.
Jason Villeneuve of Southampton was charged
following an incident September 10 on Highway
4 in Stephen Township.
The court heard that a police officer observed
a vehicle southbound on the highway which was
very loud and had excessive smoke coming from
Further investigation showed the accused had his license suspend-
ed as of August 12, 1991 for an indefinite period due to unpaid
fines. Records indicated the accused had two charges in Southamp-
ton and another in PL Elgin, all for driving while suspended.
Justice of the Peace Karen Sturdy gave Villeneuve 30 days in
which to pay the fine.
Driving while suspended
f1ony Chioros of London was fined $503.75 and given 30 days to
pay after being found guilty of driving while suspended.
Police told the court that on September 12 an officer witnessed a
vehicle northbound on Concession 12-13 on Sideroad five in Ste-
phen Township. While doing a routine check police seized open liq-
uor and upon further investigation discovered the driver to be under
suspension for unpaid fines as of July 11 or 17, 1991.
Chioros told the offic& he was aware of the fines but his girlfriend
was to pay them.
Failing to yield
Beatrice A. Munn of Exeter entered a guilty plea to a charge of
failing to yield from a driveway following a car collision outside of
Canadian tire in Exeter December 9. Munn was fined .$78.75 and
given 60 days in which to pay.
Falling to stop
Gerald Noble of Seaforth was fined $78.75 after pleading guilty to
a charge of failing to stop for a stop sign.

at the intersection of Highway 83 and County Road 11 witnessed a
northbound vehicle go through the intersection at about 15 mph
without stopping.
4 Noble..was given 30 days to pay the fine.

Said Dawson, "II is going to re-

effort, co-operation, understanding

Education to have a successful

During the lar meeting
Board members themselves took

Trustee John Jewitt moved that
