Junior 'D' wrap-up
physical Exeter Hawks overpower Lucanlrish, win 64
Continued from page 14
"When Shackleton is here, he's
our leader," said Hawk defenceman
Larry Lewis. He picks us up. We
play better when he's here."
Lewis and John Bell anchored a
very strong defense corps. Bell had
several hard hits including one
which sent Steve Mathews to the
ice. liealso saved a_ goal when he
luded_ don So
woit Riddell on a
breakaway late in the second peri-
od.
With 2:36 left in the second peri-
od, Lewis he up a three -on -one

his body. Earlier in the night he
blocked a shot.
"--Yr lea

around me and by that time our
wingers got back," said Lewis
about the three -on -one.
Aggressive: Front goalie '"Clint
McCann right through the forward
ranks the Hawks were very aggres
sive.
Schiedel and Kemick said it's be-
cause she Hawks seem to take on a
different cy face -
their biggest rivals.
"We get Pumped upfor them. It's
like a playoff game. They're a pod
team and you want to go after
thein," said Schiedel.

"J don't know why we don't, we
should, If we would have, we
would have crushed Seaforth." •
"We go into other games with the
same format. When we play some-

LUCAN - From peasants to kings m just 48 hours.
Friday night the •Lacan Irish. lost 6-4 to the Exeter
Hawks,• two days -later, they beat west division leading
Mitchell Hawks 6-1.
The win lifted the Irish to a 16-4-2 OHA Develop-
ment League record, six points behind Mitchell who
have five games in hand over Lucan.
Against Mitchell, the Irish had three shorthanded
goals and were basked by some outstanding goaltend-
ing by veteran Bob Szabo.
He said after Friday's game, Irish coach Ken.Need-
ham was upset with his team's performance.
' "Ken gave it to us pretty good, we don't like, to lose
two in a row," said Szabo.
On Stmday against Mitchell, the Irish had their trou-
bles early as Ed VanKerkocrlc had to serve a too many
men on the ice penalty and at one point Mitchell •had a
four minute powerplay.
But Jeremy Jemec scored on an ice levet shot past
Dennis Scherbart.h with his first of three goals, this
one coming shorthanded.
"Otir penalty killing is probably the best thing we.
have," said Jeniec.
•"That's probably our strong point. We've scored a lot
of shorthanded goals this year. Guys like Jemec and
(Scow) Riddell make a big difference with their
speed,,' said Needham.
Riddell blocked a Mitchell shot at the blueline
which went ahead to Lucan's Andy Ross. He got it
over to Kevin Leitch who scored on a rising wrist
shot.
Jon Mei achern was stopped on a backhander but on
the next play he blasted one which rang off the post_ to
make it 3-0. Scherberth was so upset he came to the
Mitchell he ncheseepped°off the ice and whenhe:did.go
back in net, the -Hawks were snapped with a 'two min-
ute penalty fair illegal substitution.
Just one goal: Late in the first period Mark Ulch
scowl the Ione Mitchell goal.
With a short bench, the Irish were down to four de-
fenceman so Needham converted Brett Revington and
put him back on the bluelinc. .
"He played excellent. We only had five defencemen
with him. Seen Amos played well," said Needham.
Szabo noticed how well both Revington and Amos
•were playing in front of him.
"It'sybard ,for them, they're young and adjusting. If I
can make that first save it gives them confidence," he
said.
A good individual effort by Riddell saw the Irish take
s-4-1 lead in the second period. The rookie was hauled
down in front of the Mitchell goal but while on the ice
swiped at the puck and it went into the corner.
Lucan padded the lead when Jemec scored on a pow-
erplay. He was alone at the side of the net and Reving-
-
ton hit him with a perfect pass.
Jemec has been a welcome addition back to the club
after he started the season with the-Strathroy Junior
Blades.
"It was a lack of ice time and 1 wasn't happy in
Strathroy," said Jemec about his stay with the -Blades
"I'd like to go back to that level next year."
Late in the second period, Jemcc was cross-checked
from behind and after he got up was hit again. Referee
Paul Petrie did not call a penalty and after Jensen com-
plained, Petrie slapped him with a ten minute miscon-
duct.
"I think two minutes would have been sufficient. I
got hammered from behind twice."
Jemec put the icing on the cake with 1:41 left in Us
game when he netted the hat trick as he tapped in a re-
bound off of a hard shot by Jason Wilson.
