Make a resolution now to enter the Usborne Sesquicente nnial Beard Growing Contest. Down through the years beards have been recognized as symbols of royalty by Egyptian kings and queens and of wisdom by such Green philosophers as Socrates. By A.D. 200, many European men were growing beards for appear- ance reason only. Beards lost their popularity about 1100 but became fashionable again during the 1500's and 1600's. Styles attributed to this period include the goatee and the Vandyke. In the 1800's many men grew side whiskers called mutton chops, with just the chin shaved. The term "Sideburns" arose during the Amer- ican Civil War when a Union gen- eral named Ambrose Everett Bun - side popularized this habit of shaving his chin and allowing whiskers to grow on the sides of his face. Beards went out of style again about 1900 but regained their popu- larity in the 60's and 70's. Registration for the Usborne Beard Growing Contest will com- mence at the Levee to be held on Sunday, January 5, 1992 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Kirkton-Woodham Community centre. If you are un- able to attend that event, give Dave and Mary Gardiner or any of the Special Events Committee mem- bers a call during the week of Janu- ary 6 1- 13. A nominal $2.00 regis- tration fee is requested. All contestants must be clean sha- ven at the time of registration ex- cept for the category of best main- tained beard. Beards must remain until after the official judging, or be subject to a penalty to be decided upon by the Beard Growing Com- mittee. Closing date for the contest will be June 14, 1992 at the "Historical" Car Rally, just in time to shave be- fore that hot haying weather. Prizes will be awarded for. 1. Best all round moustache and beard. 2. Best trimmed beard. 3. Most colourful beard (natural col- ouring only!). 4. Longest beard. 5. Worst attempt. and 6. Best main- tained beard (for those of you who are already in style). Whatever reason you choose - ap- pearance , royalty, wisdom, fashion - plan to participate in the Usborne Beard Growing contest.
