Brucefield
discuss new
firehall
BRUCEFIELD - About 10C
residents turned out in Bruce -
field last week to discuss propo-
sals for a new Brucefield Volun-
teer Fut Deparunent hall.
A rough figure as to cost of
the new building was put forth
by Stanley Township reeve Ho-
ward Armstong as 8275,000.
The hall would be similar in de-
sign to that of Bayfield and
would be 4,800 sq. feet with
four bays to house the village's
pumper, tanker and emergency
van.
Residents have been offered a
free piece of land approximately
1/l mile outside of Brucefield
by owner Paul Cormier, but rut -
men have expressed concern
over an increase in response
time because of the location. In
addition, the property would re-
quire a new road and additional
landfill.
Second ice
pad needed
in St. Marys
ST. MARYS - Two young
hockey players approached town
council last week to build an ad-
ditional ice pad in the town of
St. Marys. Kyle Trott and Ian
Young, both peewees, came to
council armed with a letter to
help them voice their opinion.
The duo noted their grueling
schedule which many mornings
has them playing at 6 a.m. or di-
rectly after figure skating when
the ice has become choppy.
Ice time is also a factor as
most teams are granted only two
slots per week. Councilor Ker-
ry Campbell said officials with
minor hockey have introduced a
schedule which will free up an-
other five hours of ice time.
Campbell also said that while
a second pad hasn't been ruled
out, it is not likely to happen too
soon.

cganization down a new road

ga were president Roger George,
fust vice president Jack Wilkin-
son and second vice Bill Weav-
er.

Morris of Bruce County. Morris
joins incumbents Dora Steward -
son, Lambton Count; ; Ed Seg-
sworth, Halton Region; and Ger-
ry Carey, Prescott to complete
the seven person OFA execu-
tive.
GATT deal

LONDON - Federal Minister
of State for Grains and Oilseeds
Charlie Mayer, told soybean
growers at a meeting in London
last week that absolutely, grain
and oilseed prices will rise as
the result of a GATT deal.
Pets at Christmas
holiday hazards
• 1\ff;WMARI4t' - The holiday
season is almost upon us. This is a
joyous time of the year, and certain
important considerations should be
given to your pets. For example, did
you know if your dog or cat ingests
too much chocolate (you would
likely consider the amount very lit-
tle), it could have a toxic affect on
your pet, possibly causing death?
Dogs are more often the victims as
cats are usually too finicky to eat
chocolate. Obvious symptoms to
be aware of are: vomiting, diarrhea,
depression, incoordination. muscle
tremors and eventually seizures,
coma and death.
Monitor your guests so they can
not quietly slip "Fluffy" or "Duke"
the occasional jelly bean, cookie or
' other sweets. This "junk food" can
-diarrhea and discontentment
for your pet. Fatty or spicy food
should be avoided, as they can lead
to gastrointestinal upsets for your
Pets.
Turkey and chicken are tradition-
al festive favourites enjoyed by
people as well as their pets. How-
ever, turkey and chicken bones can
prove very dangerous if they splin-
ter and get lodged in your pet's

throat or intestine. If you do treat
your pet to chicken and turkey, en-
sure the portions are small and
completely free of bones. Small
portions are less likely to cause up-
set to your pet's digestive system. If
your pet is on a special diet, it
would be wise to check with your
veterinarian before giving them any
treats. Felines are especially
sneaky; they can quickly and quiet-
lyump onto a counter or table,
grab a bite and be gone before you
know it.
Tinsel is a common adornment
for a beautiful Christmas tree, but it
can also prove deadly to your fe-
line. If your cat plays with string or
tinsel, the material could get
trapped by the feline's rough tongue
and swallowed String_or tinsel can
- block the animal's intestine and this
can be fatal. Signs to watch out for
include: lack of appetite, vomiting,
diarrhea, lethargy, and pain in the
abdomen. If you suspect your cat
has ingested tinsel seek immediate
veterinary care. If this is the case,
emergency surgery will be neces-
sary to remove it.
Cats, being naturally curious
creatures, are often attracted to the
decorated Christmas tree and may
attempt to climb the tree. Safely se-
cure the tree at the base and the top.
Be sure to conceal all electrical
cords to prevent your pet from
chewing them.
Some common holiday plants are
toxic to pets. Three of the more
common being the poinsettia, and
the berries of the holly and mistle•
toe. Often cats will find these
plants enticing, but if they are eaten
they can cause severe vomiting, di-
arrhea and abdominal pain. Keep
this in mind if you plan to purchase
such a plant for a pet owner.
When shopping for pet gifts, re-
member to assess the safety of a
toy. Do not purchase toys that have
ribbons, bells. strings or other re-
movable pieces such as squeakers
The tiny parts could be easily swal-
lowed. If you are unsure about the
safety of a pct toy check with a
qualified pct store supply attendant.
Do not forget your pct at Christ-
mas. Animals are often ignored
during this hectic time of the year
as their human guardians are at par-
ties and other festive events. Try in-
volving the animal in some of the
festivities, remembering that your
pet's daily routine has likely been
disturbed. These disturbances can
be especially upsetting for puppies
and kittens. Escape from that hectic
environment and spend some quiet
time with your pct.
