Exeter Hawks prey on Lancersbut bitten by Mitchell
By Ray Lewis
EXETER - If there is a word
lacking in the Exeter Hawks dic-
tionary right now it seams to be
consistency, unless you count their
uncommon knack for splitting
games.
But although the squad hasn't
strung together many wins in OHA
Development (Junior 'D) league
play, the bright side is they haven't
had many periods of back-to-back
losses either.
Coming off an 8-7 loss to the
Exeter Hawks trainer Wayne Dickens (left) and coach John
Kernick check the status of centre Shawn Chipchase after a
lengthy shift. Despite a pair of goals from Chipchase, the
Hawks dropped a shoot-out to their Mitchell rivals 8-7 in Exet-
er Friday night.
Woodburn's four points
pace Lucan Irish
By Fred Groves
LUCAN - Trailing 3-1 in the first
period, the Lucan Irish outskated
the visiting Belmont Pests 7-4 here
Sunday afternoon.
In a rare matinee Ontario Devel-
opment (Junior D') hockey game,
the Irish increased their record to
13-2-2. Lucan beat Alvinston 5-4
on Wednesday and tonight will
host the Mitchell Hawks.
Sunday's game saw Irish rookie
Scott Woodburn score the first two
Lucan goals and later set up two
more.
Woodburn played for the Parkhill
midgets last season, and in the fall
was in the Exeter Hawks camp but
when it came to signing on the dot-
ted line, the Irish won.
"I was trying out in Exeter. Lucan
was a bit better and I want to be on
an all -Ontario team," said Wood-
burn.
It should be noted the Hawks
have improved and are challenging
the Irish for third place in the west
division standings.
Belmont's Tim Coombs got his
first of three when he walked in on
Lucan goalie Bob Szabo and it was
2-0 at 4:57 as Joe Vandenwerf
scored on Szabo's stick side.
Woodburn got one back with a
shorthanded tally off the draw but
Coombs with his second of three
took back the two goal lead. The
Irish went into the dressing room
down by one thanks to a long shot
by Woodburn which Pests goalie
Chris Ungar seemed to get a piece
of.
"He always scores goals when we
need them," said Lucan coach Ken
Needham of Woodburn.
Coombs made it 4-2 just 49 sec-
onds into the second period but it
was all Lucan from then on. Jon
McEachern circled the net and
could not be knocked off the puck
as he jammed it in.
With 29 seconds left in the peri-
od, defenceman Ed VanKerkoerle
scored on some hard work by wing-
er Steve Mathews who got Belmont
to cough up the puck in their own
end.
Busy weekend: Belmont were
playing their third game in as many
nights and it seemed to catch up to
them in the late moments of the
game.
"Three games in three nights is
pretty tough. It's going to happen to
us at the end of the year," Said
Woodburn.
A comparison shows Lucan with i
just 17 games played while the
Pests have played 21 and Exeter
24.
The winning goal came from
VanKcrkocrle again who got his
second while the Irish were playing
with a two-man advantage.
"We pretty well buried them right
there," said Needham.
Paul O'Shea jumped on a Jason
Wilson rebound and McEachern
scored into the open net to round
out the scoring.
Commenting on why his team got
off to a sluggish start, Neodham
said, "it's only our second game in
two weeks. It takes a bit to get back
into game situations."
Lucan was without defencernan
Kevin Leitch who got a two -game
suspension after fighting alterca-
tions against Alvinston and centre
Dan Brand is out with a sore wrist.
Veteran Brian Schuyler is back
for a month and he'll help the Irish
up front.
"He always has a good effort,"
said Needham.
Sunday's game saw McEachem
grab Jon Vandenwerfs stick and
give him a couple of punches in-
cluding one or two when the Bel-
mont player was on his way down
to the ice.
Lucky charms: The Irish bench
is in desperate need of repairs it
would be nice to see it fixed before
serious injury occurs. Times -
Advocate three stars 1. Paul Wood-
burn 2. Ed VanK ritoerle 3. Tim
Coombs.
Mitchell Hawks at home on Friday
night, the locals turned right
around and knocked off the Lamb-
eth Lancers in Lambeth Saturday to
gain a share of third place. Exeter
currently sits tied with Lambeth in
the west division with a 13-10-1
record, although the Lancers have a
game in hand.
"1'm happy with their play," said
coach John Kenrick. "They've
maintained a pretty decent work
ethic and I think by the second
week of January we should be sit-
ting pretty good."
Exeter 4, Lambeth 3
Doug Clark's goal with 1:52 re-
maining in the second period
proved the difference Sunday night
in Lambeth, as the Hawks pulled
out a 4-3 victory.
In a very even match each team
traded a pair of first period goals.
Exeter got off to a quick start as
defenseman John Bell dented the
twine just over a minute in.
After Lambeth tied the game, left
winger Dan Ryan notched a goal
when he scooped up a rebound left
over from a Jamie Cornish blast
from the point.
A powerplay goal by the Lancers
again tied things up, but in the sec-
ond period the Hawks forged
ahead.
Left winger Dave- Dalrymple
took a pass from defenseman Steve
Vandenberk and buried it, but the
Lancers got that one back just 56
seconds lifter.
Clark then beat Lambeth goal -
tender Darryl Bond for the winner,
and Exeter netminder Josh Symons
did the rest with a great supporting
cast of defensemen.
Steve Vandenberk and Larry
Lewis both had strong games for
the locals.
Mitchell 8, Exeter 7
Despite a hat trick by Andrew
Barton and a pair of goals from
Shawn Chipchase, Exeter found
themselves on the wrong end of a
shootout Friday night at home
against their Mitchell counterparts.
Exeter managed to outshoot the
first -place Mitchell Hawks 45-40,
but ended up losing a close one 8-7.
"We played well enough to win,"
said Kernick. "But a couple of bad
breaks did us in."

The locals took took a 2-1 lead
on goals by Chipchase and Barton,
and increased their lead when Der-
ek Shackleton scored the goal of
the evening.
After gathering up a loose puck
at centre, Shackleton made a couple
of nice moves, beat two defenders
and carried into the Mitchell zone.
The Hawk centre circled the net
and moved back towards the neu-
tral zone, but then danced along the
blueline and snapped a wrist shot
beating Mitchell goaltender Jason
Brooks to the sack side.
Unfortunately. Exeter then suf-
fered a blow which would be felt
into the third when rookie centre
Ray Cousineau collided with an op-
ponent at the Mitchell blueline.
Cousineau suffered a severe char-
ley -horse and is listed as day-to-
day.
Mitchell battled back to tie in the
second and after a see -saw period,
the teams entered the dressing
room knotted at six.
The locals then surrendered two
goals in the third, and although
Scott Schiedel got one back with
two minutes left, Exeter couldn't
complete the comeback as they
missed several scoring opportuni-
ties.
There was even more bad news
as, in addition to Cousineau, Exeter
has lost speedy centre Mark Reid

far an indefinite period due to a
back injury.
Hawks happenings: Winger Ja-
son Heywood has signed a card
with the Hawks. Heywood has
spent the first half of this season
with St. Marys Junior 'B' Lincolns.
Ray Cousineau spent last Monday
in a Lincolns uniform and looked
very impressive against the Alymer
Aces. Winger Dan Ryan has made
his much -awaited return to the Ex-
eter lineup. Ryan has been out
since October 12 when he suffered
a broken bone in his leg in a game
against Belmont.
