Senior 'A' h9ckey action
Sharks score early but Mohawks win
By Fred Groves
EXETER - Looks can be deceiv-
ing.
Sunday night the Strathroy
Sharks brought a dismal 2-12-1
record to the South Huron Recrea-
tion Centre but they quickly took a
2-0 lead on the host Exeter Mo-
hawks.
However, the locals managed to
get past a somewhat boggling de-
fence to win their ninth straight
Senior 'A' hockey game, 6-4, in-
creasing their league -leading record
to 12-3-0.
Exeter forward Dale Gibbon who
had two goals, said the Sharks
played a 1-3-1 defence when the
Mohawks were breaking out of
their own end. It meant the de-
fenceman had to go with the puck
and try to hit the centreman be-
cause the wingers were tied up.
"They don't forecheck hard but
they pick up our wings. It's tough
on a breakout because the wingers
are required to carry the puck," said
Gibbon.
"Weaker teams do it against the
stronger teams."
Most of the time the Exeter de-
fencemen were able to connect on
the long breakout passes to the cen-
tres. But other times saw them
coming back and regrouping.
"What they [Strathroyj were do-
ing, is they wouldn't forecheck our
defence when we had the pucL Our
forwards were having trouble get-
ting back," said Mohawks coach
Dave Revington.
In the first period, the Mohawks
fired 15 shots at Sharks' goalie
Scott Hartley but couldn't score. At
the other end, Strathroy put both
their shots past Exeter starter Jeff
Hill.
Joe Scherer got his first of three
on the night when he got a back-
hander past Hartley. Scherer drilled
one from the slot but with 40 sec-
onds left in the first period, Shawn
Reaume put the Sharks into the
break up by one.
Exeter came out quickly in the
middle frame as Andre Prevost
jammed one in and the score was
tied 3-3 just 24 seconds into the pe-
riod.
The second period saw Gibbon
score on a nice shorthanded effort
and he got his sixth when the puck
shot by Dave Wilson from the point
bounced in of his leg.
"The second one off the shin pad
was lucky," admitted Gibbon. "I
spend a lot of time in front of the
net and eventually they are going to
go in. It was a night of lucky saves
by their goalie."
Poor start: Hill started in goal
for the Mohawks but took himself
out of the game after he misjudged
a shot which defenceman Kris Bed-
ard alertly got in front of. Reving-
Exeter centre Paul Bames chases Strathroy's Dan Gibson while Mohawk Andre Prevost looks
on during Sunday night's game.
CHICKEN LITTLE
WAS WRONG!
The sky is still up there.
We didn't exterminate our-
selves in the '50s.
Lake Erie didn't become a
marine desert.
Kids from the '60s aren't all
druggies.
In fact, all in all, things are
pretty good.
Maybe Chicken Little did
too much foraging in the
barnyard.

ton said after the game he probably
would have pulled Hill at the end
of the first anyway.
"He's not feeling well, he's flat,"
said Revington. "He's coming out
of junior where he played a lot."
Now Hill is in a three -goalie rota-
tion with Woolford and Rick Pikul
who took the night off.
With a 5-3 lead at the end of the
second, the Mohawks watched as
Strathroy's Brad Muir pulled his
team to within one but Scherer got
the hat trick when he scored into
the empty net at the buzzer.
"We've had a couple of tough
games against these guys. They're
starting to come on," said Gibbon
of the Sharks.

Thank You
The support for our
food booth at Darlings
the . day of the Santa
Claus parade was tre-
mendous. We would
like to extend a special
thanks to the Darling
Family and their staff
for making this a suc-
cessful event.
PLUS
The response for the
community for our
Food Drive Night was
extremely generous.
Thanks again.
The Exeter Hawks
Mohawks fans saw a lot of new
lines Sunday night. The most nota-
ble being that Time Shields back for
his first game after back surgery,
was between Scherer and Greg
Snyder. Also, Richard Hawkins
who along with Snyder had two as-
sists, played centre.
Mohawk moments: The Booster
Club's Food Drive was a big suc-
cess thanks to help from Nabisco
and Siep's Valu Mart....Forward
Gord Brooks skated in the warmup
but his shoulder is still bothering
him so he did not play...Times-
Advocate three stars: 1. Dale Gib-
bon 2. Joe Scherer 3. Strathroy's
Scott Hartley.
