Payne powers Mohawks By Fred Groves EXETER - Just who is this guy wearing No. 22 for the Exeter Mo- hawks? He was what you might call a fringe player last year but this Win- ter Greg Payne has already gotten five goals. Sunday night he scored twice to lead the Mohawks to a 3-2 South- ern Counties Senior 'A' hockey win over the Dorchester Dolphins. The victory saw the locals up their record to 11-3. Sunday they will take their eight game winning streak against the visiting Strathroy Sharks. Payne didn't see a lot of ice time last year but he is in beuer shape not only physically but mentally. "I'm coming to the rink more. I have a different schedule at work, I just hope things keep going up," said Payne. He has a scoring streak going, connecting at least once now in the last three games. "Everytime I come to the rink I want to score," he said. Following a scoreless first peri- od, Tim Duff scored for the ns just 40 seconds into nd frame but Payne tied it up a long wrist shot that handcuffed Dorchester goalie Chris Molloy. "I was in the slot and he stopped it and then it went in," said a sur- prised Payne. • Rookie Scott Pfaff gave the Mo- hawks a 2-1 lead when he pounced on a rebound off a shot by Jeff Warren and then Payne notched what proved to be the winner. He was left wide open in the slot and stepped in and buried one into the mesh. "They weren't pretty goals. If I wasn't in to it [mentally], I wouldn't have shot." Dorchester, a much improved team this year, got one more as Quinn McKnight got one past Mo- hawk goalie Rick Pikul. Exeter's veteran hetminder came into Sunday's game with a 2.82 goals against average and a .903 save percentage. "Our goalterider made some de- cent saves and we outshot them," said Mohawks coach Dave Reving- ton. Exeter was shorthanded on the blueline all night as they only had five defenceman dressed and when Dave Wilson was sidelined for a while after a slash to the knee, there were only four. "We're used to playing with six but Richard Hawkins can play back if need be," said Revington. Members of the Exeter and McCurdy Public school boys volleyball teams (above), were locked in a heated bat- tle Friday, as they tied for first In the annual school tournament held in Huron Park. In the final match of the day, Exeter narrowly de- feated McCurdy 15-13 and 15-8 to win the champion- ship. At the girls tournament held at Exeter Public, the home squad with no trouble won the tournament ,as they went undefeated. In a re -scheduled game played last Tuesday in Exeter, the Mo- hawks slipped behind early as Don Hudson gave Petrolia a 1-0 lead just 35 seconds into the game. It was 2-0 when Greg McEachern got his first of two. But beginning at 4:37, the Mo- hawks picked their way around the Victorians defence and Joe Scherer scored . followed. by Pfaff and Payne.
