ZURICH - The crossing guard
program in Zurich has been rated a
success since its inception last fall
when council, spurred by the con-
cern of ratepayers, hired a guard to
supervise the crossing of students
across the Highway 84 Main Street
on their way to school and back.
When reviewing the crossing
guard program at last Tuesday's
meeting, council agreed to continue
the program until school's end in
June.
Helen Gingerich has expressed
an interest in continuing her duties
at least until that time.
Clerk Maureen Simmons had
said at council's previous meeting
that she had seen an increase in the
number of students passing the
muncipal office windows at school
time, meaning they were heading
for the crossing rather than crossing
the highway at other points in
town.

EXETER - Failing to stop for a stop sign net-
ted a fine for a Hensall native in Justice of the
Peace court in Exeter last Tuesday.
Christopher J. Fahner of Hensall was fined
$78.75 after entering a plea of not guilty to dis-
obeying a stop sign at the Thames Road and
Rosemount Avenue intersection in Exeter at
3:58 p.m. September 25.
Police told the court that while operating radar
near the intersection a truck northbound on
Rosemount failed to stop for the stop sign at the intersection and in-
stead turned left.
The officer testified there was minimal traffic, and no obstruction
between driver and sign.
The accused said he came to a stop but later said he hadn't seen the
stop or yield sign.

ty and fined the dCctisbd $78.75 with three months to pay.

25.
The incident occurred around 2:10 p.m. on Highway 84 in Hay

running on the north side of Sideroad 5 in Hay Township at 3:15
a.m. Further investigation showed the validation sticker expired on
the vehicle as of October 4.
The accused admitted there was no insurance on the vehicle and
was very cooperative.
Postill was fined $503.75 and given four months to pay.
Failing to turn in safety
Cecil McNall pleaded guilty to a charge of turning not in safety.
The court heard that on September 25 on Thames Road west of
Exeter at 8:15 a.m., the accused was operating a front end loader.

another vehicle.

Council commends ABCA
ZURICH - Village council is al-
ready looking favourably on a bud-
get proposal by the Ausable Bay-
field Conservation Authority which
projects a general levy increase on
the order of four percent next year.
The levy, which is charged to the
32 member municipalities as their
portion of the conservation authori-
ty budget, was protested in recent
years by council's complaining it
was increasing beyond the rate o in-
flation.
"I must commend them on corn-
ing in with an increase that small,
considering the 20 and 30 percent
increases they've had in the past,"
said Zurich reeve Bob Fisher at last
Tuesday's council meeting.
Council, however, noted that the
figure was preliminary, but ex-
pressed hope the $3,010.65 project-
ed levy for the village would carry
over onto the final budget.
The ABCA is struggling to keep
its 1992 budget within a four per-
cent increase over 1991 since the
Ministry of Natural Resources an-
nounced cutbacks in funding to On-
tario's conservation authorities last
month.
The four municipalities which
'pay the most to the ABCA are Ste-
phen Township at $35,746.31
(1992 projected figures), the Town
of Exeter at $30,818.29, Bosanquet
Township at $23,211.88 and Hay
Township at $21,086.04.
