Letter to Editor
Thanks to donor support
I would like to thank your
readers for the support that they
have shown me and my family
for my plea for potential donors.
The response has been
and contin-
ues to be tre-
mendous.
I would 11
like to remind
people that I
wrote not only
on behalf of my sister but on be-
half of people all over the world
waiting for transplants.
To become a potential bone
marrow donor, go to the Red
Cross and ask to be tested and to
register with the international
registry. The test itself is a sim-
ple blood test. It will be ana-
lyzed and the results will be pro-
grammed into the computer. If
you are a potential match you
will go for a second and possi-
bly a third blood test. The third
sample is mixed with that of the
person requiring the transplant.
This mixture of samples will be
observed for two to three weeks
to see if they are actually com-
patible.
The donor will remain in hos-
pital for approximately 3 days to
re-cover from sore muscles and
for observation. The recipient
will spend arproximately the
next 6 months in isolation as he/
she will have no defenses to
fight any infections of germs.
There is only a 25% chance
that someone in your family
could be a potential donor if you
needed a transplant. Please, go
register to possibly give some-
one the gift of life.
Once again I would like to
thank everyone for their support.
Sincerely,
D. Becker
P.O. Box 147 Grand Bend,
NOM 1TO
P.S. As of Tuesday November
26, 2 potential donors failed the
final testing but apparently more
potential donors from North
America have been found. Pres-
ently my sister is being treated
with interferon.
