Bend Council appoints
Cam Ivey as deputy -mayor
By Fred Groves
GRAND BEND - The new coun-
cil is in session in Grand Bend and
Monday night they appointed Cam
Ivey as deputy -mayor.
At a meeting which began behind
closed doors at 7 p.m. and was
open to the public at 7:30 p.m.
mayor Tom Lawson said it was
council's wish to have Ivey as the
deputy -mayor.
"Cam did top the polls and that
brings weight to council," said
Lawson.
Re-elected councillor Bill Uniac
at fust asked council to wait until
their next session to appoint a depu-
ty -mayor but later in Monday's
meeting, Uniac said he was only
"kidding" and agreed Ivey should
be appointed.
"There was no favouritism," said
Lawson of the decision to appoint
Ivey.
Lawson said that prior to Mon-
day's first official session of the
nrw council, the newly elected
group had met three times and
clerk -treasurer Paul Turnbull was
present.
"We're all going to get along and
respect each other and that's what
we've done," said Lawson.
Earlier in the day at the Grand
Bend Legion, the Hon. Mr. Justice
John Kennedy swore in the new
council. In his address to a large au-
dience, Lawson compared what lies
ahead in the village to a flock of
geese.
"People can get where they are
going if they go on the thrust of
others," said Lawson.
He said that when one goose fly-
ing at the head of flock is tired an-
other one takes its place and when
one is injured or killed two others
follow it to the ground.
"The people who have been
sworn in believe in co-operation,
not confrontation. We want to work
together."
Representatives from the Ontario'
Provincial Police, municipal staff
and Grand Bend's legal and engi-
neering firms were on hand for the
inaugural ceremony.

Lawson said council will meet in-
formally prior to the meeting to go
over any "thomy issues".
"Each one [councillor] will vote
on his own. It's not to inhibit," said
Lawson.
Monday night's meeting saw
works superintendent Bud Mark-
ham give his report, but it was not
discussed in the open session.
Busy first night: Council was
kept busy their fast night but no
major decision were made.
Lawson and Ivey however will be
meeting with the owners of the
property adjacent to the Beachplace
Condominiums concering the sur-
rounding fence.
"Some of us have had discussions
with the property owner and we'd
like to meet with him," said Law-
son.
Also at Monday's meeting, Law-
son said council will be looking to
tightening up its bylaw enforce-
ment.
"We take a position to ban over-
night parking. We have had a thor-
ough session with the provincial
police," he said.
"We're on, track and we're con-
cerned we want to improve our im-
age."
Council, who went in camera af-
ter the public session on Monday
will be working on setting up com-
mittees which are requested to get
their budgets to council quickly.
Regarding committees, Lawson
said they will be looking into the
possibility of having the harbour
committee responsible for the lake
front activities as well.
Winter Carnival: Dave Shep-
pard of the Grand Bend Winter
Carnival attended the meeting with
several requests, the same ones he
brought to the old council at their
last meeting.
Council granted $750 to the car-
nival for a banquet.
"The quality of [snow sculpting]
teams we're attracting is used to the
local government putting on an
opening night banquet," said Shep-
DDave McClure, the village's rep-,
resentative on the Ausable Bayfield
Conser cation Authority was also at
the meeting to give a report.
He explained that 75 percent
grants are available for people in
the watershed to keep livestock out
of drains.
McClure also explained to coun-
cil Section 83 of the Drainage Act.
"Anytime there is a spill our peo-
ple can be out within hours to do
testing. By the time they get here
from Owen Sound it could be too
late."
Grand Bend Mayor Tom Lawson was swom Into office Mon-
day afternoon by Hon. Mr. Justice John Kennedy. Lawson
and Kennedy are first cousins.
