Shirley Valentine has
all the Wright stuff
By Ray Lewis
LONDON - A frustrated housewife who finds more solace in talk-
ing with the walls of her kitchen than her husband. Doesn't sound
hard to believe.
The Grand Theatre in London greeted a new play, Shirley Valen-
tine, with open arms Friday evening, and the audience responded
with a huge embrace of the skills of its star, Susan Wright.
Willy Russell's one -woman play, which was made into an Oscar -
nominated movie in 1989, is directed at the issues concerning to-
day's woman.
Valentine is a Liverpool housewife trapped by the rigors of life,
without breath. She finally decides a trip to Greece with a friend is
the answer, and leaves her home and its pressures for a two-week
trundle.
But after experiencing Greece, she finds herself being reborn and
decides not to return home. Once again she learns to live.
Wright's performance is rejuvenating for all who witness it to say
the very least. She grabs hold of your heartstrings and tugs but man-
ages never to lose her wit.
A seven-year veteran of The Stratford Festival, Wright has re-
ceived awards for performances on CBC, as well as at The Tarragon
Theatre and The National Arts Centre.
This season she appeared as Mrs. Webb in Our Town, Germaine
in Les Belles Soeurs and Citizen's Wife in The Knight Of The Burn-
ing Pestle. But this performance is truly her best.
In Valentine a wall and rock become her friends, the audience her
confidantes, while her performance itself is worth every standing
ovation.
The play will continue at the Grand until December 21 and is a
must.

Constitutional
reformlsabout
many things.
But mostly it's about you.
As Canadians, we are now facing one of the
most important challenges in our history.
Proposals have been put forward by the
Government of Canada to improve our
Constitution. These proposals, for a more
united and prosperous Canada in which all
Canadians can feel at home, are currently
being reviewed by a special parliamentary
committee. They will also be considered by a
series of conferences run by independent
Canadian organizations.
Some of the proposals include:
• a Canada clause that speaks of our hopes "
and dreams as Canadians, our values,
our diversity, our tolerance and our
generosity of spirit
• recognizing the right of aboriginal peoples
to govern themselves while being protected
by Canadian law '
4, ensuring recognition of Quebec's distinc-
tiveness and of minority language groups
• reforming the Senate to make it elected,
effective and much more equitable than
it is now
• strengthening Canada's economic union
so Canadians can work and conduct business
anywhere in the country
• guaranteeing property rights.

these proposals will shape the future
