Back on November 22, the Lucan Irish were beaten 8-0 by the fust place Mitchell Hawks. Friday, the Irish bounced back and beat the hosting Seaforth Centenaires 5-2. The win saw the Irish increase their Ontario Development League (Junior 'D') record to 11-2-2 and they will try to improve on that Wednesday when they take on Mitchell. "Against Mitchell we didn't get the breaks," said Lucan's Greg Muir who had three assists against Seaforth. "It seemed like a magnet tonight. The puck was laying on the stick." The Irish slipped behind the Centenaires early when they couldn't clear the puck and Dan Wildfong got one inside the post past Bob Szabo. But at 14:07 Lu - can's Jon McEachern tied it up with a shot over the goalie. The second period belonged to the Irish as the Centenaires coughed it up in their own end which saw Andy Ross firing one Seaforth goalie Jason Pethick pokes the puck away from Lucan forward Scott Riddell in Friday night's game. Hawks have tough weekend at home, tie Mitchell, lose to Lakers EXETER - The Exeter Hawks first weekend home stand didn't prove -as fruitful as they would have llked in OHA Development (Junior' 'D') league action. The lo- cals lost a heartbreaker Friday night at the hands of the Port Stan- ley Lakers, but did manage a tie against the league leading Mitchell Hawks Saturday. Coach John Kernick seems to be doing a little soul searching, look- ing for an answer as to why his team does so well against those above the Hawks in the standings, but struggles versus the lower clubs. "We beat the top two clubs in their own building and come home to lose to a team below us in the standings," said Kernick. "Right now it's got me kind of baffled." Part of the reason could be the league is enjoying a little more par- ody than it has in the past. Kemick has commented several times on the strength of all the teams in their division. "I think the division is wide open this year," said Kernick. "You really can't count anybody out." Exeter 4, Mitchell 4 In a very even match the Exeter Hawks tied their Mitchell counter- parts in Exeter Saturday night. Trailing 2-1 in the second, Hawks captain Al Blommaert tied things . pp; when he, let ,R shot go m the point that found its way ast Mitchell netminder Dennis Shirbarth. Exeter then grabbed the lead as Dave Dalrymple made a nice move to feed Larry Lewis whose shot was tipped home by Shane Robin- son. Mark Reid's goal at 2:14 of the third kept the Hawks in control of the game, but Mitchell tied it up 16 seconds later and it remained that way through the remainder of the third period. In overtime, tight checking pre- vetnted, either team from many good scoring opportunities,,witlt.Fader being outshot 2-1. Clint McCann played well in net for the Hawks, and shots on goal for the game favoured Exeter 30- 29. Left winger Andrew Barton also played a strong game. Port Stanley 5, Exeter 3 A three goal outburst in the sec- ond period by the Port Stanley Lak- ers put a halt to the Exeter Hawks Friday evening in a 5-3 loss. A Dan Brand backhander made it 3-1 after 40 minutes. "We tried to forget last Friday's game," said Lucan coach Ken Needham. "They could have put their heads down and gotten beaten again," he added. In the third period, injuries and penalties didn't hamper the Irish as Steve Matthews shot through a crowd from ten feet out and Paul Woodburn made sure he was at the front of the net when he scored. Defenisvely, Kevin Leitch and Keith Robson did a good job keep- ing the Centenaires away from Sza- bo. Lucan has lost two key players in veteran highscorer Greg DePrest and rookie Dean Hammond. Both have gone to London to play high school hockey. Muir and Needham agreed that although the two will be missed, the rest of the team should be able to pick up the slack. "It's hard but if you look at the stats no one is out front. Everyone can pick it up," said Muir. Lucan recently reaquired Brand who started the season playing Jun- ior 'B' in Windsor. "DePrest scores a lot of goals but Brand replacing him is a good switch," said Needham. muffiercentre ruway • "p.ur•a e.,o, e.• a Get Your Vehicle Protected with OIL GARD'S "Formula 11" No dripping on the driveway S7495 or "Classic" Low Drip $5995 Because Rust Never Sleeps 210 Main St. Exeter 235-0466 4 more good reasons to open an account at Laurentan Bank rl vt.:,•kt *°q/ 41", 6% ) Ar Open an account and you could win a trip for 4 to Walt Disney World Resort!* Until December 20th, when you open a savings or chequing account at Laurentian Bank you're automatically eligible to win a 1 week trip for 4 to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando Florida!!
