EXETER - There was a lot of noise made at the South Huron Recreation Centre Sunday night as the Exeter Mohawks dumped the visiting Walpole Hawks 13-4. Exeter ran their Southern Counties Senior 'A' record to 9-3 and have now won six in a row. Last night they hosted the Petrolia Victorians. From early in the first period, the arena was full of noise Sunday as Walpole's Al Mara screamed and yelled with not only the officials but his own team and was ejected. Mohawks Andre Prevost delivered one of the biggest hits of the year and teammate Kris Bedard let one go from the blueline that hit the goal post and probably could have heard downtown... •. Mohawks' forward Dale Gibbon was tied up during Sunday's game but he still managed to score one. But the most noise came from Exeter sharpshooter Joe Scherer who scored six goals !gur of those in the third period' to raise his league -leading total to 18. The veteran winger said he is not concentrating entirely on winning the league scoring tide. "After this many years it would be nice but it's secondary," said Scherer now in his fourth year with the Mohawks. Exeter led 4-0 after the first peri- od and 7-4 after 40 minutes before exploding in the final frame. Walpole had a short bench and goalie Joel Bennett saw a lot of rubber. "1 was getting them away quick. He was fighting the puck," said Scherer. He got his fourth powerplay and first shorthanded goal of the sea- son. Scherer's fourth on the night saw him skate into the slot and snap one under the crossbar. "When you've got a good screen going it's nice to let them go. Nine times out of ten I'd go around [the screen]," he said. Balanced attack: While the Mo- hawks have got the most offensive- ly productive line in the league with Scherer, fellow veteran Greg Snyder and Craig Oster, Sunday other players were putting the puck in the net Wayne Urbshott netted a pair with singles ' from Gord, Brooks, Dave Wilson, Jeff Shipley, Dale Gibbon and Greg Payne. Wilson The Exeter Mohawks were presented with the Ontario Hockey Association Senior 'B' champi- onship banner prior to the start of Sunday night's games. The banner represents a bronze fin- ish in 1990-91 senior hockey competition. Here, Mohawk captain Jeff Shipley, left; Is congrat- ulated by OHA Director Bill Stubbs while Mohawks' president Gabby Mol holds Op the banner. Oster raised his point to- tal to 30 with four assists. "If we play someone that neutral- izes that line we're in trouble," said Exeter coach Dave Revington who was pleased to see some of the oth- ers scoring. Shipley came racing down the left side and blasted it past Bennett and later in the opening period was hurt when he slid into the boards. He has already missed several games this season due to injury. Plane's goal showed he can score as he let go with a very hard shot in the second period. Richard Hawkins who played well offensively and defensively hadapair of assists. Walpole trailed 4-0 but fought back in the second period on a pair of goals by Paul Rossi and singles from Ed Jacobs and Trevor Lang- staff. "Our concentration wasn't there from the start," said Revington. Short bench: Walpole arrived late for the game and came with just one goalie and 13 skaters. Mara was given a roughing pen- alty in the first period, and referee Steve Baker added a 10 minute misconduct. When Mara got his hands on one of the officials, he was given a match penalty. Tempers heated on the Walpo ,44. bench but coach Ric Dauw seemed"'"' to get things under control and after the game apologized to the Mo- -hawks and -their fans for a poor showing by his players. "We came down here with half a hockey team and they weren't ready toplay," said Dauw. • lie said Sennett is slightly handl- _ capped and is the el b's thin is - "gives you 100 percent He comes to all the practices. Mohawks moments:...Rumors have it former Dunnville Mudcat badboy Gerry McSorley, who has been banned from the OHA, is playing in the Colonial Hockey League...Brooks delivered a hard hit which sent him to the showers early...There was a minor mixup at the start of the game, although Mo- hawks' goalie Jeff Hill was indicat- ed on the game sheet to start, Paul Woolford went the distance.Times- Advocate three stars: 1. Payne 2. Scherer 3. Richard Hawkins. Geiger and Ramer learn about Jr. 'D' From the outside looking in, moving from minor hockey • to Junior 'D' may not be that big of a step. After all, they've degraded the league by labelling it 'de- velopmental' and in the past it has been nothing more than a place for goons to beat up on other goons. But it's quickly becoming a place for young thinkers. To de termine whether or not they want to try and make hockey their career. While the logical step for a 16 -year-old if he wants to make it to the pros would be to play a year of Junior 'B' and wait for the phone to ring from an OHL team, it doesn't work that way if you come from a small community. Getting noticed in a small centre like Zurich is nearly im- possible so a player has to make it happen and for Ben Geiger and Jamie Ramer, Junior 'D' is the first step. The two left wingers play for the Seaforth Centenaires and both hope this will be a stepping stone as they both have their sights set on playing Junior 'B' hockey. Geiger is a tall kid who tends to find his way into the penal- ty box a little too much. Whether he is too eager or just overly aggressive, it has cost him a suspension in which he had to sit against the Lucan Irish Friday night. On Sunday however he scored a pair of goals in limited ice time to up his total to nine. "I'm not producing as much. I guess I'm a little nervous," said the 17 -year-old. When he was with the Zurich midgets last year and played for the South Huron Panthers high school team he was a lead- er, but Geiger is learning junior hockey is different. "It's a lot of clutch and grab." "I can no longer lead the team. I have to play with the team." He said the Centenaires have added a few players to the ros- ter and it could jeopardize his spot. "My ice time is a little slack but I do expect it." Playing for both teams last winter, he and Ramer got a lot of ice time. Now its one practice during the week and a couple of games. "It's a lot easier. Jamie and I probably played five times a week last year," said Geiger. What it does do though is put a cramp on his social life. For a 17 -year-old that at times can be uncomfortable. That, com- bined with -limited playing time, could see him back in Zurich with the midgets. Small but quick: Ramer is almost the complete oppositeof Geiger. He's smaller and soft spoken. The Junior 'D' league is known to have a few big bruisers which means Ramer has to keep his head up. He doesn't let that bother him too much and says he tries not to be too timid. "It's a different style of play. I have to do a lot of skating." As noted by Geiger, it's a clutch -and -grab typle of hockey. • "You just have to cope with it and get away from it," said His eyes are set on Junior 'B' and said, "I think I can [make it], I just have to beer down." sidelines by Fred Groves An observation: What's wrong with minor hockey officials who are doing bantam and midget games? Coaches are telling their players not to retaliate but on sev- eral occasions this year I have seen a player attacked from be- hind. The opposition is hammering away but ., only gets two minutes. If a coach tells his player to fight back he is promot- ing violence. If he tells the kid to stand there and take getting punched in the head its okay if the bad guy is given more than a minor but most of the time he's not. We as hockey spectators are soon going to see more fights if officials don't start giving more than two minutes for the goons jumping in and starting things...Just a note about the Exeter Mohawks, they wilt be holding their annual food drive on December 15 so don't forget to bring canned goods to the game. - — ---- This Week's Specials, Specials In effect from Dec. 4 to Dec. 10 Assorted 9' evergreen garlands - r Assorted Christmas gift bags - r Assorted tree decorations - r Assorted Bead garlands - r All Christmas Wreaths and Wall Swags r All Christmas evergreen & berry clusters & pics.
