Emmanuel Baptist Church_
women enjoy afternoon tea
EXETER - The basement of Emmanuel Baptist
Church was transformed into a Victorian -era parlour
on Saturday. Eighty ladies enjoyed tea, scones and
jam and trays of fruit and cheese while admiring an
old-fashioned Christmas tree, flowery window swags
and wall and table decorations, and displays of
quilts, dolls, cradles, old books and other mementos
of a century ago.
Annabelle Walz commented on the heirlooms
brought by many of the guests. Treasures included
lockets and watches first worn by a bride three gen-
erations ago, priceless tablecloths and pillowcases
edged with intricate knitting or crochet, a rosewood
tea caddy, and fragile china cups and plates. Anna-
belle explained how to date a piece of china by the
absence of marking or the stamp giving country of
origin.
Guest speaker Lotti Kelsall, Montreal, posed the
question "What do you treasure most?" She had
brought along a small brass lamp, one of the few
things her family had managed to save while fleeing
Russia after the Bolshevik revolution.
Kelsall noted that she, like most of us, was once so
occupied with the "urgent" she neglected the "impor-
tant". Will what matters today still matter in 1,000
years?
She has learned that relationships are more impor-
tant than clean drawers and tidy closets.
"The most important relationship in my life is my
relationship to God my Father through His son Jesus
Christ," she said. "God wants my life to be a picture
of what He's really like. I need to let Him use His
word to change me".
Her husband, John Kelsall, was the speaker at a
men's breakfast Saturday morning hosted by Emma-
nuel and held at the Three AAA Restaurant.
Kelsall used examples from his experience as sen-
ior v/p of operations for CN in relating the require-
ments for leadership in the business world with living
a Christian life under the leadership of Jesus Christ.
