Junior 'D' roundup
Hawks win two
By Ray Lewis
EXETER - The Exeter Hawks
seem to be back on track as they
took two of three games in OHA
Development (Junior D') action
this week. The locals defeated the
league leading Mitchell Hawks in
Mitchell Tuesday, lost at home to
Belmont Friday and then handed
the Bulldogs an 11-1 drubbing Sat-
urday in Mt. Brydges.
The Hawks improved their
record to 9-9 and are currently in
fourth place in the west division,
just three points back of third place
Lambeth.
Hawks 11, Mt. Brydges 1
Doug Clark paced a dominating
Exeter attack with a hat trick and
centre Mark Reid had a pair on Sat-
urday as the Hawks pummelled the
Mt. Brydges Bulldogs 11-1.
The Hawks came out fast and fu-
rious Saturday grabbing a 2-0 lead
just over a minute into the first pe-
riod. Derek Shackleton and Clark
scored and that was all the Hawks
would need with solid goaltending
from Josh Symons.
"We were very impressed with
the effort we got tonight," said co -
coach George Pratt. "And Symons
really played a strong game."
In his two starts since being
called up the young Parkhill native
has allowed only three goals.
The locals provided all of the of-
fense opening a four goal lead by
the end of the first and adding three
more in the second before Symons'
bid for a shutout was broken by
Jeff Knapp of the Bulldogs.
Shaync Robinson, Ray Cousi-
neau, Nick Wicckowski, Larry
Lewis and Andrew Barton all
chipped in with singles.
Belmont 8, Exeter 4
A lacklustre performance over
the first two periods on Friday saw
the Hawks lose 8-4 at home to the
Belmont Pests.
"We worked so hard the previous
three games, but didn't show up at
all for that one," said Pratt.
During the past two weeks the lo-
cals were successful in knocking
off the three teams who stand ahead
of them in the standings, but again
had trouble with Belmont. The
Pests have only five wins this sea-
son, but three of them have been
victories over Exeter.
Clint McCann started in net for
the Hawks but was taken out mid-
way through the second period in
favour of Symons.
Trailing 3-0, Al Blommaert
scored a powerplay goal at 13:32 of
the first to bring Exeter within two
but that was as close as the locals
would get. Belmont then built a 6-
1 lead by the end of the second be-
fore Exeter finally got things going.
Robinson added a single as did
Paul Manders and Clark to again
bring Exeter within two, but the
Pests fended them off restoring
their four goal lead.
Exeter 5, Mitchell 1
The Hawks opened the week
against their namesakes in Mitchell
Tuesday with a convincing 5-1 win.
"It was a really good win for us,"
said Pratt. "There was a solid ef-
fort all the way around."
Mitchell's Derek Cherry scored
just two minutes into the opening
frame, but then Exeter tightened up
defensively. McCann became un-
beatable, stopping 31 shots.
Cousineau tied things up for Ex-
eter in the second period on the
powerplay, their fust of three goals
with the manpower advantage.
Robinson scored the winner just 400
seconds later, with Reid and Na-
than Blight drawing assists.
Blight then chipped with a single
of his own, while Wieckowski and
Manders followed with a power-
play marker each.
Exeter see action next in a home
stand this weekend when they host
Port Stanley Friday and Mitchell on
Saturday.
Lucan Irish split games
MITCHELL - The Lucan Irish
failed to score here Friday night as
the west division leading Mitchell
Hawks won 8-0 in OHA Develop-
ment League play.
It was the only time the Irish
have not scored this year and it was
just their second loss of the season.
Friday night they travel to Seaforth
to take on the Centennaires.
Wednesday night however, the
Irish had little trouble with the
Lambeth Lancers, winning 7-2.
Dan Brand returned to the Lucan
lineup, scoring two goals and set-
ting up another.
He was with the Junior 'B' Wind-
sor Bulldogs but, according to Lu -
can coach Ken Needham, things
didn't workout.
"The story I got was he wasn't
getting the ice time and he didn't
want to sit on the bench."
Needham said Brand will add a
lot to the hockey club.
"Ho's an excellent faceoff man,
probably the best we have."
Darren Neil and Jon McEachern
each had a pair of goals in Lucan's
tenth win of the season. Paul
Woodburn also scored.

Panther corner
Hoopers make it to consolation final
By Fred Groves
EXETER - In preparation for the
upcoming Huron -Perth senior boys
basketball season, the South Huron
Panthers made it to the consolation
final of their annual tip-off tourna-
ment Saturday, coming up short 44-
21 against Woodstock's College
Avenue Knights.
South Huron opened the eight -
team event with an 80-21 lost to St.
Thomas St. Joe's who later lost the
tournament championship 45-42 to
Arva's Medway.
But early Saturday morning, the
Panthers gained a berth in the con-
solation game with a 50-32 win
over Clinton's Central Huron Red -
men.
The Panthers and Redmen are
both in the H -P Tier 2 which has
South Huron travelling to St. Marys
on December 6 for its first game.
Despite losing to the Knights,
South Huron coach Terry O'Rourke
was not disappointed since the
weekend games were the first of
the year.
"It was the kind of game we need
right now. For this time of the year
it's okay," said O'Rourke.
College Avenue held a 12-8 lead
at the end of the fust quarter. In the
first quarter, Panthers' Brett Ride-
out had a steal and went all the way
to the hoop for a layup.
The Knights were caught travel-
ling a couple of times in the second
quarter but still maintained a 21-10
halftime lead. South Huron's Mark
Lynn highlighted the third quarter
when he got a rebound and hooked
it in.
Throughout the game, one of the
Panthers' biggest problems was
moving without the ball.
"We did a better job of it as the
game went on. The guys inside
don't have a lot of experience," said
O'Rourke.
In the third quarter, the Knights
committed a lot of fouls, sending
the Panthers to the line ten times of
which they hit only three.
"There was a time when we were
down by seven points and missed
Hockey team undefeated
EXETER- The South Huron boys' hockey team won its third straight
game on Wednesday as they defeated the defending Huron -Perth champi-
on Central Huron Redmen 6-3.
A strong effort was put forth by all Panthers players which impressed
coach Paul Cronin.
"The boys went into this game realizing that they had something to
prove from last season. They showed a lot of determination," said Cronin.
A strong defensive game with timely goals helped the locals upset the
very fast Clinton squad.
Coach Pete Heeney added, "last week at practice the players worked
hard on backchecking, picking up a man and following them to the net.
That's one of the things we did well."
South Huron started the scoring in the fust period with two goals before
the Redmen could respond. This didn't affect the locals as they scored two
more at the end of the first and led 4-2 at the end of the first period.
The fast pace slowed down in the second period and with one minute
left, the Redmen scored on a powerplay. South Huron added two more in
the final period.
Scoring for the Panthers were Fred Godbolt with two, Chad Ramer,
Dave Schwindt, Nick Szabo and Sean McCann.
South Huron will take its undefeated record to St. Marys on Friday.

O'Rourke.
South Huron has a resurgence in
its boys basketball program as
O'Rourke has 15 players where last
year there was only eight; three
have returned this fall.
"Last year we lost a lot and there
wasn't that many moving up [from
junior]."
Point guard Ryan Hern and for-
wards Pete McAllister and Brett
Rideout are the only returnees.
Against College Avenue, McAllis-
ter netted seven points and Ridcout
had six. Although Hem did not
score in this one, he had nine
against Central Huron.
Panthers S0, Redmen 32
Saturday morning, the Panthers
dominated early as Hern hit a short
jumper and McAllister showed
good hustle after he missed a fee
throw, raced in to get his own re-
bound which saw Mark Russell
score. •
South Huron had three steals and
led 14-9 at the end of the first quar-
ter.
McAllister, who had 16 points,
hit three -in -• a --row -in-the second
quarter. Central Huron fell behind
but regrouped and a jump shot from
the top of the key by Jeff Balsdon
made it 22-22 at the half.
Corey Sargeant, who along with
Russell did a good job in the mid-
dle, gobbled up a rebound and
made it 33-23 in the third to give
the Panthers a comfortable lead.
Henn had nine points and Rideout
and Russell netted eight each.
St. Joe's 80, Panthers 21
Speed was the difference in this
one as South Huron trailed 51-12 at
the half.
McAllister led the Panthers with
