Wassail at Talbot Theatre
LONDON - The sixth annual pro-
duction of Wassail!, a musical cele-
bration of Christmas and the Win-
ter Solstice, takes place at Talbot
Theatre, at the University of West-
ern Ontario, an Saturday, Decem-
ber 7 at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, De-
cember 8 at 3:00 p.m. The colour,
pageantry and good humour of
Wassail! have delighted hundreds
of Londoners of all ages for the
past five years.
"Wes hal" (or "wassail") is an an-
cient Anglo-Saxon toast meaning
"be whole". "Wacss►il!" - the pro-
duction - toasts its audience and the
Christmas season with a hearty
blend of English dances, songs and
seasonal customs and takes, as its
starting point, the fact that the earli-
est carols were, in fact, dances.
Throughout the production, songs
of the season and the rhythm and
movement of traditional dance are
freely mixed.
Ancient customs such as a Mum-
mer's play, sword dance, the Yule
log and the Lord of Misrule are
woven into this fabric of song and
dance. All of it is knit together by
prose and poetry from 18th and
19th Century England. Costumes of
the early 18th Century round out
the colourful seasonal tapestry.
This is the second year that Was-
sail! has been produced in Talbot
Theatre. Earlier productions were
staged in the McManus Studio
Theatre at the Grand, and at Alt -
house College Auditorium. This
year's production, as last year's, is
directed by Doug Beattie. He is
well-known to London audiences
as director of the Wingfield trilogy
of plays. In the spring, he will di-
rect Perils of Persephone at the
Grand Theatre.
Wassail! is an event not only for
the community, but by the commu-
nity. More than thirty dancers, sing-
ers and musicians representing a
broad spectrum of the community
have come together in -this produc-
tion to give voice and expression to
some of the most enduring themes
and sentiments of the season.
Tickets for Wassail! are available
from the Grand Theatre and UWO
Central box offices, and are $7 for
adults and $5 for children (under
12) and senior citizens.

contributed spare change to various
jars located in the cafeteria desig-
