New position easy for Pfaff as Mohawks edge Dorchester
By Fred Groves
EXETER - Strength up the middle. If you want to
win hockey games that's what you have to have.
With the help of solid goaltending by Rick Pikul and
strength at centre, the Exeter Mohawks edged Dorches-
ter Dolphins 3-2 in overtime at the South Huron Recre-
ation Centre in Southern Counties Senior 'A' hockey
action Sunday night.
After dropping their first two games, the Mohawks
are now 5-3.
Rookie Scott Pfaff moved over from wing to centre
out of necessity because of lack of bodies at that spot
and he came up with his best game thus far of the sea-
son.
Pfaff, who played Junior 'C in New Hamburg the
past six years, set up Gord Brooks for a shorthanded
goal and won 8 -of -12 faceoffs in the third period.
With Jeff Shipley and Tim Shields out with injuries,
Mohawks' coach Dave Revington has had to juggle his
lineup and with that realignment, Pfaff has found him-
self at centre.
"There was a spot open one game and Rev asked me
to play. I'll do anything I can to help the team," said
Pfaff.
A towering newcomer, he and veteran Greg Snyder
saw a lot of ice time against .the Dolphins. Snyder is
off to a great start and Revington was taking advantage
of his eagerness.
In the second period with the score tied 1-1. Pfaff
went in to replace Richard Hawkins on the faceoff
while the Mohawks were shorthanded.
Pfaff won the draw and with Brooks went up the ice
and scored Exeter's second shorthanded goal of the
season. Pfaff dug the puck out of the corner and got it
over to Brooks who snapped it high into the corner
past Kevin Cole.
"I've been doing okay on the draws. I played a lot in
midget but not in junior." said Pfaff.
He has noticed a big difference between junior and
senior.
"It's a lot smarter hockey. It's so heads up. If we don't
have a play at the blueline we don't dump k in."
Confidence: Revington Is pleased with Pfaff, his
size makes him a natural for winning the faceoffs and
it's boosting his confidence.
"He's playing with more confidence. He's playing
the way we expected, he's using his size," said Reving-
ton.
Sunday, faceoff wizard Shipley played a couple of
shifts and re-injured his kg which meant Pfaff had a
lot of pressure placed on him.
"He dominated the draws which is something we've
been missing."
Joe Scherer, the league leading scorer, gave the Mo-
hawks a 1-0 lead but the Dolphins tied it up on Scott
Cole's goal. Brooks' was the only second period tally
and with less than four minutes left in the game, Cole
tied it up with his second, forcing the game into over-
time.
Kevin Cole was taken out of the game after he
pulled a muscle and just 58 seconds into the overtime,
Scherer scored the winner on Cris Molloy.
'I didn't know what to expect," said Pfaff summing
up the game. "They beat us 6-3 and we beat them 7-0."
In the shutout win, Pikul was between the pipes and
he rose to the occasion again on Sunday.
"I expect tighter defensive games with everyone and
well have to adjust our game," said Revington.
On Wednesday, Exeter travelled to Chatham for a 9-
6 win. Scherer netted a hat trick, Craig Oster scored
twice, Snyder had a goal and five assists, while Wayne
Urbshott, Brooks and Dave Wilson also scored.
The Mohawks hit the road for a few weeks as they
travel to Dorchester on Friday, are in Strathroy on Sat-
urday and won't be back in their own building until
December 1 whey they host Walpole.
Mohawk moments: Chet Couture and Shields are
expected back by the end of the month. Biggest hit of
the game on Sunday was delivered by Mohakws de-
fenceman Barry Baynham who caught Scott Smibert
with his head town. Tures Advocate three stars: 1.
Pfaff 2. Pikul 3. Kevin Cole.
Hawks split weekend games with tough Lambeth Lancers
EXETER - The fifth win of the
season was a dramatic one for the
Exeter Hawks Friday night as they
edged visiting Lambeth Lancers 7-
6 in OHA Development hockey ac-
tion.
Sunday, however, it was the
Lancers winning at home, in a
close 4-3 decision.
Friday, Exeter built a very com-
manding 7-0 lead but couldn't stay
out of the box and watched as the
Lancers chipped away and just
stopped short of sending the game
into overtime.
With a 5-0 first period lead,
coach John Kernick yanked starting
goalie Clint McCann in favour of
Josh Symons who joined the club
just last weekend.
More goals made it 7-0 midway
through the second but the walls
soon came tumbling down around
Symons.
"They've got a good offensive
team and we let tip a bit," said vete-
ran defenceman Larry Lewis.
With 1:18 left in the game, the
Lancers, who lost just their third
game, pulled goalie Darryl Bond
for the extra attacker. The puck
trickled through the goal mouth but
didn't go in.
"I think we all kind of relaxed,"
said Lewis.
Beating the Lancers was a big
confidence builder for the Hawks
who have been struggling, ' but
Lambeth surpassed Exeter's limit
for opposition goals. —
"It was nice to win, but there is
no way they should haves
that many- goat§. We're trying to
keep our goals against average
down to three," said Lewis.
Exeter got on the board just 1:47
into the contest when Dave Dal-
rymple tipped in an Al Blommaert
shot from the point. A re-difected
shot on a powerplay by Derek
Shackleton made it 2-0.
The barrage continued when
Lewis let go with a clearing shot
from the blueline which got under
Doug Rollins' stick. Andrew Barton
Made it 4-0 when he parked in front
of the net and the nicest tally of the
night gave Exeter a big• lead after
20 minutes.
Shackleton with his second raced
in on a line change and scored on a
wraparound. Rollins was replaced
by Bond at the start of the second
period.
Dalrymple got one early in the
second and Shackleton made it 7-0
as he walked in on Bond. But it
was 7-2 after 40 minutes as Lamb-
eth's Jim Moore and Scott Mac-
Donald gave the Lancers some life.
Four goals, one each by Dennis
Hamden, Scott Forster, Jason
Knapp and another by Moore
pulled the visitors to within one.
Lancers 4, Hawks 3
Lambeth got on the board first
when Warren Smith connected on a
powerplay but Doug Clark tied it
up and it was 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Lucan Irish still undefeated after ten games
By Fred Groves
LUCAN - It may only be No-

the Lucan Irish contenders for the
OHA Development League (Junior

They always have been, but this
year was supposed to be a rebuild -

ing season. A smattering of vete-
rans combined with a troop of
promising but inexperienced rook-
ies.
But look again.
Wednesday night the Irish beat
the first place Mitchell Hawks 5-3
to remain undefeated with an 8-0-2
record. Lucan is idle until tonight
when they host the Exeter Hawks
at 8:15 p.m.
Against Mitchell, the Irish took a
2-0 lead when Jon McEachern fired
one from high in the slot at 6:46;
andjust four seconds intq a Hawks
penalty, Kevin Leitch, blasted one
from the point.
"Before the game we talked
about going out and working hard.
Our goal was to get two quick ones
and take them out of the game,"
said Irish captain Andy Ross.
"We were talking about taking it
to them. We wanted to go at them
hard," said Irish coach Ken Need-
ham.
But Mitchell, who lost just their
second game of the year, came
back and it was 2-1 at the end of
the first frame when a screened Lu -
can goalie Bob Szabo couldn't see
a shot by Colby Kipper.
"They are a hard working club,"
said Ross of the much improved
Hawks.
Early in the second paled. the
Irish took a two -goat brad when
McEacherige bis
night as he pounced on a Greg
Muir rebound.
The goal of the game made it 4-1
as Irish defenceman Ed VanKer-
koerle stole the puck deep in the
Hawks' end got it to Ross who fed
Muir. A simple shot between the
legs and the Irish were way in
front.
Top line: The line of McEachem
at centre, flanked by Ross and
Muir has turned into the best line
in the league.
"We played a little together in
the playoffs last year. We've put a
group of guys together and it's fal-
len in place," said Ross.
In the third period, Don Boyd
slipped one ice level into the corner
past Szabo, but three -and -a -half
minutes later, VanKerkoerle scored
just in time as the Hawks were
pouring on the pressure.
Lack of discipline on the part of
defencemen Brad Bowers and Scott
Amos saw the Hawks have a two-
man advantage for 1:13 and Jeff
Smith scored from the point.
Bowers tried to rough up one
Hawk and while he was in the box,
Amos got a liule overly aggressive
and joined Bowers.
Being in contention for the divi-
sion lead is important to the
"Everyone says its the start
year and it doesn't mean anything,
but we don't think like that. It's not
too early," said Ross.
Needham has his team shooting
for die top.
"I try and play on them that it's
important to be there. If you're on
top you have something to strive
for." .
Being at the top, or near the top
of the mountain means someone
--has to push you off. Right now it
looks as though it will take a lot to
knock the Irish off the mountain.
Lucky charms:...Two familiar
faces were in the crowd on .

attended. Jemec says he was getting
a lot of ice time before suffering a
broken right hand.
The score was knotted 3-3 after
two periods as Shackleton and An-
drew Barton scored for Exeter
while Smith with his second and
Phil Sanders answered for Lamb-
eth.
The winning goal came at 5:24 as
Lancers captain Steve Plaskett gave
his team their eighth win of the Les-
son.
Exeter travels to Lucan tonight
for an 8:15 game and Saturday they
travel to Port Stanley to take on the
Lakers.
